Rectum?

Rectum irritation is setting in at the half way point of salvage radiation. What worked best for you guys? Anything not in a messy mineral oil base?

Thanks,

George

    Inquire your radiologist

The symptom is expected. Ask your radiologist for due meds. I wonder if you did a colonoscopy before RT to check for any ulcerative colitis. If present it could turn the issue into a nasty experience.

    Hope for improvements.

Hey VG. No UC so I should be

Hey VG. No UC so I should be good there. My Rad Onc sugested Prep H with Hydrocortizone but even they admitted that its messy. I am reluctant to call it a PITA for obvious reasons. I just wondered if any members here found a greasless form of help that worked for them.

    George,

A friend of mine had long-term IMRT after surgery relapse 10 years ago. Things were less precise then, but his colon had lots of burn damage. He even required extenisve surgical cauterization due to bleeding later.

Dehydration due to loss of bowel control is what ultimately did him in, although his PSA was 1,100.  He was on morphine-based diahreah meds, which did no good at all.

Demand follow-up and the proper post-RT care,

    George,

I went through a round of adjuvant radiation.  About 2/3's of the way through therapy my rectum was giving me fits. The PA at the cancer center prescribed some steroid suppositories which helped a lot. Good luck.

    Suppositories

    George,

I don't recall the brand name, but it was perscription strength. I think it was a corticosteroid. Probably several different brands. One interesting thing, I had a colonoscopy done recently and the doctor showed me pictures looking back toward the rectum. The flesh there was discolored and varicose looking due to the radiation.
