Desertgirl, Alaska always looks so beautiful.  You are lucky that you got to go there.  Did you have any trouble with bears?  It seems so many towns have them coming into town looking for food.

There were black bears quite a few times around the place where we were staying just outside Juneau proper.  They would try to get into the garbage when they thought we were not around.  Once or twice a person in the house would here them and try to scare them off.  One morning last week a small one was in the backyard, scrounging around.  We watched as it came on up on the back porch.  WOW!  The owner's little dog did not want to go out to the backyard after that bear left.

The salmon are now running upstream, and so seeing bears in the residential areas is starting to wind down for the present.  We saw some black bears up around Mendenhall Glacier, up along a stream that had a lot of salmon moving upstream to spawn.  We'd watch the bears jump into the stream to try to grab a salmon.  Around the area we could see the remains of salmon here and there.

Our hosts said that whenever they are out for a walk, not just at night, they feel better if they have a firearm with them for just in case.

It was weird to have to be very aware of the possiblities that bears could show up at about any time.
