PSA Rising after radical prostrate removal

My husband had total prostrate removal surgery 10 yrs. ago. In the last year his PSA has been rising again. Six months ago it was 2.1 and today it was 4.0 The Dr. said he expects it to be 5.0 within the next 6 months and he will then have to have surgery again.

    More Surgery?
Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to read of your husband's recurrence of prostate cancer. After a radical prostatectomy 10 years ago, exactly what is it that your doctor thinks he's going to remove this time? I have never heard of additional surgery following recurrent PCa and I hope you are seeking multiple opinions from experts.

Most oncologists feel that a PSA rise to 0.2 after prostate removal is indicative of recurrence and the standard treatment is radiation or hormone therapy of both. Your husband's PSA levels leave little doubt that his cancer is back.

Best of luck to you and your family as you sort the next steps out.

    ?????????????
Are you sure that his prostate was removed because of prostate cancer, or did he have a surgical treatment for a benign prostate problem.

As Kongo mentioned PSA reading of 0.2 or above after surgery is indicative of recurrent prostate cancer.

Something is strange or not complete about your post.

    Yes, my husband did have
Yes, my husband did have radical prostrate surgery. His primary Dr. told him the other day that the cancer was growing again and more than likely in six months it will be a 5.0 and at that time he will refer him back to his Urologist that removed the Prostrate. His Urologist told him at the time he did surgery that he was removeing it because it was cancer, after he removed it, he told him he got it all. ( I'm thinking that he didn't and there were some residual left). I also think that he should be seeing the Urologist now instead of waiting for another six months. I don't quite know what to think about it either, but am going to try and talk my husband into going to the Urologist now instead of waiting. I know the results are correct that he told me as he brought a copy of the PSA lab test home with him and it does show from 2.1 to now 4.0

    Good Grief
I hope that you ignore your primary care doctor's advice about waiting and that you immediately go see your urologist. Your regular doctor is not a cancer specialist and if he was up to date on his research about prostate cancer he would have sent you back to the urologist years ago...like when the PSA first started rising. Your husband clearly appears to have recurring prostate cancer and waiting is not going to make it any better.

I expect the urologist will want to do a battery of scans and imaging tests and eventually recommend follow-on radiation treatment, hormone therapy, or both at the same time.

    Best to you both.

    Oncologist
    nlward1,
Urologist seem to fade after they take the prostate. Their job is done. Anything else that your husband needs would be with an oncologist. The urologist is not going to get anymore out of this. An oncologist will schedule the scans, and mri to see if he can find anything.
Start researching Oncologists in your area. You can ask for recommendations from people on this site.

    Good luck.

It will be best for your husband to see
Medical Oncologist who specializes in Prostate Cancer...there are only about 50 of these specialists in the united states. These guys are experts in hormone therapy.
