Well we are now at day 9.
Well we are now at day 9. Bowels still haven't functioned which means stomach tube still in place. I know he is anxious to get that thing out of his nose and throat. He had some hunger pains yesterday which is a good sign. No signs of infection yet so I have my fingers crossed. I am staying in a nearby hotel so even though I spend all day here, I am able to get a good night's sleep each night. Progress is slow. I'm trying to be patient. Lisa

Lisa ,feel sorry to answer so late but had some problems lately!
Congratulations for the success of the surgery , I'm praying for a fast recovery !
    God bless you both!

    Sounds like things are
Sounds like things are moving forward. It is uncomfortable to have an NG tube but you
don't want it out too soon and have to have it put back in. I am three weeks out from my surgery, not the same kind but it was hard for everyone I think to wait for progress. I was in the hospital 2 weeks instead of 5-7 days. My husband stayed at a hotel too. I know it's a lot on you guys who have to wait around and also you want us to feel good and get out! Hang in there. It will soon be behind you.
    Sending you light.

    Lisa,
I know it is hard waiting for the bowels to wake up. I hope things start to move soon. Smart choice that you are in a hotel at night. Being well rested is huge for you.

I hope and pray things keep going in the right direction.

    Take care.

    Aloha,
    Kathleen

    Hi Lisa
Patience is key to maintaining one's sanity in a case like this. Your husband's operation reminds me of mine in many ways. I also spent a long time in the hospital after my surgery. I had the NG tube for many days because my bowels had trouble restarting too. I spent 16 days in the hospital when initially they said I COULD be out in 5-7 days. I learned then that you can't predict what's going to happen in life, cancer or no cancer.
I certainly hope your husband gets out very soon. He's lucky to have you with him for support and care. Staying in a nearby hotel is a great idea. I had one guy who was in his 30's have his Mommy stay in the room with us!! They were incredibly rude with BLASTING the TV and just being incredibly loud but that's (some) people for you! I remember that the guy shaved his head in the bathroom one morning and it looked like Jack the Ripper had been in there. Blood all over the place and pieces of toilet paper all stuck to his head to stop the bleeding. At least clean up the crime scene!
    Ah...memories ;-)

Phil, Your story is just another to make me question the term, semi-private room.
No wonder many of us are almost crazy by the time we get out :)

We are still in the hospital, day 15. Bowels are working but wound is not healing as quickly as expected. Doesn't appear to be infected so that's good. The wound is open to assist in healing from the inside out. It is a huge gaping hole about 6 in. by 4 in. Once Dr. gives the OK, they are going to put a wound vac on for three weeks but that will be at home. Dr. Says he is going to try to get us home by the weekend. I went to the mall today while father in law was sitting with hubby but found little joy in the activity. We have so much to be thankful for that I feel guilty not feeling the "Christmas spirit". TKO and Alexinlv, update us on your husbands as I know they were also scheduled for surgery. Lisa

    Hi Lisa
Really good the bowels are working. Wound will heal. It will feel good to get home, then you can enjoy the season better...just the simple things, like watching a good Christmas movie, drinking spiked (i mean spiced) apple cider, and taking a drive and looking at some of the homes where the people went nuts on their decorating. Malls are noisy and depressing in my opinion. (Downtown Columbus has a couple of breweries....did you scope them out yet??) Hope you are home free by the weekend.

    Sending positive energy your way...
I am so sorry Lisa! I can't believe it's day 15! I am so scared that the same thing will happen to my husband. His surgery is the 20th. He keeps saying maybe he'll be home on Christmas. I agree that it is sooo hard to find the Christmas spirit. Hugs!

Even if he doesn't make it
Even if he doesn't make it home for this Christmas but the plan is to have him home for many more after this one. Right now we are on a date at the hospital. instead of a movie, we are watching NCIS and instead of a six pack, we have three oxycodeines. I would say try not to worry but realize that is next to impossible. I will be watching the boards over the holidays. Keep us updated. The best thing I brought from home was a fleece blanket. The hospital ones are not so warm. Lisa

    Hi Lisa,
Sorry to hear that you are still in the hospital. We had that wound vac put in right after surgery and it stayed in for 3 days....I thought that it was standard to do that for liver surgery. We are 17 days out from surgery and my husband is so much better since we got home. He is finally able to sleep which I think is huge. He is still exhausted but doing so much better....he did loose about 20 pounds over the last 2 weeks though so hope he starts eatting. I was not smart enought to get the hotel room but will do that next time. Sleeping in a recliner is not easy esp. when the nurses come in all night long....so I need some sleep myself. Hang in there, when they start to improve it is steady and amazing. I agree with you about the Christmas spirit....I am having a hard time thinking about Christmas right now....Thinking about you and keeping my fingers crossed that you are home this weekend. God Bless you and your husband. Hugs, Teri
