Hi,
I am 49 years old and was diagnosed with Stage I, grade III Kidney Cancer in Dec of 06 and had a left nephrectomy. My last CT was 7 mths ago (everything was fine other than new liver cyst). I will be going in for my 6th mth check up again in Dec. As always I am scared. I know they say stage I rarely comes back but I am reading peoples stories where it does! I have been having hip pain for about 5 mths now and worry if its has spread or is it just arthritis. I feel like I am being paranoid. How do you know if a pain is nothing to worry about. I went from hardly ever going to the Doctor from wanting to go for every little pain, but I dont go for fear the Dr will think I am crazy. How does bone cancer feel? Does it feel like arthritis pain? Do I have a need to worry?
Would love to hear from others with Kidney Cancer.
Thank You, Velma

    Hi Velma,
First of all, DO NOT WORRY about what anyone thinks, when you feel something is different going on in your body, GO to the DOCTORS. I was told that my hip pain was arthritis. I had been having the pain for about a year, but I was pregnant and then gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, and I kept using the pregnancy as my excuse for the hip pain, they did a bone scan in dec, said it was arthritis, in may they did another to find it was indeed RCC met to the ball in my hip bone, the tumor was removed and i had to have hip replacement. I also now have a tumor on my tail bone. The pain is a constant dull pain that caused limits on certain activities. Walking long distances was bothersome. As the tumor progressed, the pain increased. I would GET A BONE SCAN!!! it's worth finding out what is going on. The sooner they find the tumor the better it is for you on treatment. The can do radiation (nothing to radiation hardly.) Much better then bone replacement.

My main advice, YOU know YOUR body, if something has changed, SEE THE DOCTOR! If need be, see a 2ND DOCTOR!

I pray your scans go/went well.

Best of luck and may God be with you.

    Lisa,
Thank you so much for responding! I have an appointment on the 22nd of this month. What stage was your cancer? I am glad you are doing well. Here is my email bt91773@verizon.net I would love to keep in touch. I am going to ask him to do a bone scan in addition to the CT, I would rather be safe than sorry. Thank You so much.
God bless you and your family!

Kidney Cancer on the other side and hip pain
    Hi Velma,
I'm sorry it's been so long, but not long after I was diagnosed my ex husband cheated and it's been a difficult divorce. Anyway, I was never able to have my left side checked yet. First, my diabetes was high and injecting the dye could cause my kidney and half to fail. It has come some. Now my blood pressure is high and I'm having pressure in my chest, fast heartbeat, just a very bad feeling. So, now I'm going through tests on my heart. My doc wants to address this problem first. I feel like I take two steps forward and five back. I still have the pain on the left side now and also my hip. It hasn't gotten worse, but I'm on so many meds I really don't know if I could tell anyway. I will keep you posted. Thank you for your concern. How are you? My prayers are with everyone.

I've been reading these posts and I too am concerned. I had kidney cancer in 2001. No treatment was necessary. They removed the kidney.

Now for the past few months, I have pain in both hips but one pain is not like the other. WHat I mean is that my left hip is sore and it just throbs but the pain in my left hip feels like someone is injecting something into it and it's painful. A slow kind of throb and it aches. Doc says it maybe arthritis and is sending me for xrays. But when I told him my fear, he dismissed it. Yet I know my body and the pain on my right side is not something I've ever felt before. So I'll deal with the xrays and see what happens otherwise,I'll have to goelsewhere but don't know where to begin at this stage. I never had an oncologist just the urologist/surgeon who diagnosed the cancer and removed the kidney. Any suggestions? I'm so glad I found this site. I was unable to sleep because of the pain and I just went on google and this site popped up.

I'm 52 years old and have been cancer free for 7 years.

I'm experiencing the same pain on my left side
    Hi,

I am also 52 and have been cancer free for 5 years. I know what you all mean about worrying about every little pain after diagnosis. I have felt pretty good since I had the left kidney removed, had no other treatment as it was stage 1 also. BUT, For the last 8+ months I have been having terrible pain on the left side. I try to isolate it to see where it is, also try to monitor if I have done anything more strenuous then normal, but find it is a chronic pain and ache now. It hurts when I sleep, sit, stretch, or whatever. I have tried a heating pad at night but it doesn't even give me a little relief. When I went to my Urologist in July he told me that sometimes the cancer can show up down the road in the bones. They don't normally do a bone scan unless there are signs. I have been reading and the only real signs of bone cancer are pain in the area. Am I jumping to conclusions or should I insist on having a scan for piece of mind? I keep attributing it to getting older, but I am not really overweight, am failry active and healthy otherwise.

Thanks in advance for your wise opinions.

I will get it checked out. I am going to my internalist in Sept so will talk aobut the bond scan. Last weekend I babied my back, did the heating pad, stretching thing and rested it hoping for relief. I'd think if it was just arthristis it woudl let up some what. I appreciate advice.

    hip pain
I have had hip pain for a long time in my left hip! I have wondered if it is related to the cancer also. I have seen where there are many survivors of kidney cancer who have hip pain. We are not alone! I also am 52 and a survivor now 11 years. Here as of late, I have been having a lot of pain in my left side period. Everyone always says, you worry to much. WELL, they are not the one's who had the kidney cancer, nor are they the ones who have to live with the fact everyday of their lives that it could come back!! It really bother's me when people do that to me. You know your body and so you keep going to a dr. till you find the right one who will check you. I am going to ask for a bone scan here real soon. I will squak till they hear me. My regular DR. listens pretty good and so I feel good about that. I am right now taking steroid shots in my back for other problems, one thing at a time. You take care and go until you get done what you need done, a bone scan would be a good place to start.

Had RCC in 1987 and had right kidney removed. I was always told that I was cancer free. Started having left hip pain (very hard walking) in late 2008. Was told that it was bursitis but after further tests had they found a large tumor on the ilium area. It turned out to be RCC. Cancer cell was still there from 1987 and settled in this area. So always need to get things checked because the first doctor I went to had it wrong. Tumor so large, they cannot remove so currently taking sutent to reduce and keep from spreading.

    Hi there,

I have never posted on a board before but here goes nothing. Ok so I am 29 years old and was just diagnosed with type one diabetes about 10 months ago. Now i have had pain in my hip and down my leg for about 7 months now, and if I move my leg in certain positions it makes the pain worse. It affects my sleep and life becasue I cant move the same way without pain. I have had the deep hallow pain that everyone describes on the inside of my leg towards my groin. I have been sent to get ex-rays for arthritis because thats what my doctor thought it might be, but there was nothing, and that was about 3 months ago. So i suppose i feel like I am in limbo now, am i being parinoid or not. I feel wrong, but i dont know what to do now. If it were say a couple of years ago I would not have thought twice about just it and move on and not thought about it again. But ever since I got diabetes i really dont know any more... So thats it in a nut shell, any advice would be sooo aprciated

    Thank You :)

    Hello
Im 35 and was just diagnosed 3months ago with having a tumor on my right kidney they where going to leave it cause it was not growing but my c t scan i just had showed it grew a hair so now im waiting to hear when my surgery will be and which kind they are going to do. My specialist told me im the youngest he has ever seen with this type of tumor on my right kidney its normally people in there 70s who get it. iv been having burning pain on my right hip area not sure if its from the kidney or arthritis. it also runs down my leg into my foot and feels like i walked on glass. but Im glad to see your doing well and that makes me feel better. I have three special needs children that need me so im fighting all the way to stay healthy. if any one else has had the same as me please let me know how things are now.

    Thanks so much

I have no advice for you other than to see the best doctors you can and be persistent in expressing your concerns.

Not sure it it helps, but I can share that I had grade 2 RCC. Had a partial nephrectomy in 1993, at which time I was told I did not have cancer (very large cystic growth). In 2021, RCC was diagnosed in the left kidney remnant (large tumor), and the remaining left kidney was removed (radical nephrectomy- open- apparently made more difficult by prior surgery).

Since the recent surgery my left hip has been numb and I have had frequent significant hip and left groin pain. CT scans and x-rays yield no diagnosis. Been treated by doctors at major centers.

I do not know if this pertinent but from what I understand there are nerves in the area of the kidney that impact the hip abductor . . . and it's all connected. Not sure if that's my issue.

Your situation may be entirely different, so do not rely on this.

    Best of luck to you.
