Hi It's that time!!!
I am having my mastectomy in the morning.
I am scared haven't been able to hardly eat all day, but glad to have the cancer taken out. I might be getting the tissue expander but not sure yet the plastic surgeon
will be there with the surgeon. If not tomorrow at a later time.
My cancer Dr don't know yet if I need radiation so she wants me to wait. She says the radiation messes with the implant. I am also getting a chemo port put in. I will be in the hospital for 2-3 days so I will update when I get back home.

I had a mastectomy and a port put in. I was terrified. It was so much easier than I had imagined it would be. The port is great because they put the medicine through that instead of poking in your arm for a vein. As a matter of fact, November 22 I will have the other breast removed. I'll keep my fingers crossed and I'll pray for you.

    Good luck tomorrow. I am
Good luck tomorrow. I am sending positive thoughts and
prayers to go with you. I had a dble mastectomy and was
pleasantly surprised at how little pain I had. One day on
IV Morphine, then only pain pills 1-2x a day for a short
time. You are wise to go ahead and get your port as I
had to go back for a second surgery to have it placed.
    God bless.

The operating room will be crowded , but if you don't let the surgical team know we're lurking, they'll just go about their business and do a careful and excellent job.

Will be thinking of you tomorrow morning.

    Sending hugs and prayers,

I hope your surgery goes as
I hope your surgery goes as smoothly and your recovery is swift. When you get home take a couple of days to rest and let others help you, then start doing the exercises they give you. The exercises will gently help you recover.

A little story for you...while in the hospital for my bilateral the nurse escorted me to the bathroom. That's normal procedure, they want to be sure you don't fall down or tangle the IV, etc. I started to bend my knees to sit on the toilet and felt a little wobbly. So I used my left hand (cancer side, more tissue removed) to hold the bar on the wall and steady myself. That was a huge mistake...the pain as I bent my arm at the elbow to sit was the worst I had ever felt...so DON'T DO THAT!

Let us know how you're doing.

    Hugs,

    Linda

Best of Luck ... I will be praying that it goes
well for you and your surgical team, no hiccups or complications.

take pain medication when necessary. Multiple pillows in various, sizes help with sleeping on your back.

Please have the RN's instruct/teach you how to milk your drains before leaving the hospital. Just my humble suggestion.

Please have cups, saucers, plates at arm level - as well as re-arranging your fridge for more commonly used items at arm levels. Tide/Downy small container sizes - also at arm level. Reaching up and grabbing heavy items -- will tear your stitches, as well as hurt your arms. Muscles and tissue in breast, as well as arm areas will be cut, moved and sewn back together.

I tried to take a bath ..but hence could not pull myself out of the our spa tub, no muscles or strength in my arms after bilateral mastectomy.. It took my husband, and daughter some time to pull me out of the tub == without hurting me. Not a pretty time, or sight to say the least. So I opted to shower ...My husband removed our shower head, and replaced it with a flex hose type so I could shower maneuvering the flex hose from waist down, as well as place shower water under my arms.

Lastly, please make sure you do your exercises as prescribed by Plastic Surgeon, and Physical Therapist.

Strength, Courage, Hope and Speedy recovery.

    Hey KitKat,
I too had a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. My tissue expanders are in place and fully inflated. I even went through radiation with my expander in .. so glad I did because now my radiated skin is already fully expanded. Implant exchange surgery is next for me. Sending loving thoughts and prayers your way today. I think you will find the most annoying and uncomfortable part will be living with those darn drains for a couple of weeks.

God speed on the recovery sister,
    Lorrie
