Hi ladies;

I would like to ask if anybody with BC is following a "Special" diet ?
I am 37 y/o and this is devastating chapter in my life.

I am recovering from surgery which I had on Valentine's day 2011 - Lumpectomy, Centennial note & 14 lymphs removed.

Currently I am not on any medication yet but waiting for Chemo & Radiation treatment.
Also diagnosed with DCIS, so expecting also double mastectomy.

I do expect that Chemo & Radiation may change my taste buds or may have difficulty to eat.
However, I was wondering WHAT to eat to help my body heal better.

Thank you
Helen

    Your doctor will probably give you some suggestions, or ask the nurses. Eat what tastes good and enjoy what you can. Something COLD after your chemo treatments will help prevent mouth sores. Stay light on sugar, cancer loves sugar. Lots of fruit and veggies but watch acid fruit. Apples are great. Bananas can be helpful if you have intestinal issues with the chemo. Right after treaments watch out for spicey foods that can irritate your system. Alos lots and lots of water to flush the bad stuff out of your system. Your Dr. will probably tell you all this but if not aske the nurses for advice, they seem to keep on top of what has helped others.

    There was a Dietician (sp?) at my Cancer Center. Lots of liquids, rest, eat what you can. Most have a change in taste. Some have a "metalic" taste. Had problems with salty foods, potatoe chips, pretzles, irritated the taste buds. Use mouthwash with no alcohol in it ... Get ready for Chemo .. the clinic will have booklets of information. Worst Eater
    I didn't have chemo or radiation but I also have DCIS.Taking tamoxifin.

    I am the worst eater.Always have been. Never thought about what I ate and helping cancer or hindering.I did ask my oncologist once about soy.My husband and I make soy candles.That got things going.She said yes to candlemaking but NO to eating soy.I started looking at ingredients on everything I brought in the store.Cake mixes, pizza mixes, and almost everything I picked up had soy or soy lechtin(sp). I wanted to gain a few pounds.Meant alot to me.So I got some Ensure.Knowing it had soy.BUT didn't drink it alot.Went to my oncologist and told her I am tired of reading food labels and everything has soy.She said those bars of cookies/mixes etc are OK BUT stay away from soy milk, soy bars and of course Ensure. Then I wanted to get some healthy things. I love broccoli and brussel sprouts.I eat that alot but if I can't eat that I drink my newly found alternative,FUSION.I read and heard this stuff is good.You get your fruits, vegetables and vitamins all in one.It is a drink but it has antioxidents.Flushes poisons from your body.There is something else like that but forget what it is.

    So simple. If I am in a hurry I pour a glass of FUSION.I love that stuff and I am actually gaining a few pounds.Just takes 3 8 ounces to get what we need a day.Another thing is cream of wheat.Very high in iron.

    Still i'm not the best eater but I feel good except for stress.That brings the body down.

    I no longer worry about fixing a cake or a pizza.Very little soy.

    To think so many vegetarians eat nothing but soy. Thinking it is good for you.

    My friend drank alot of orange juice during her chemo treatments.She was never sick through it.Treatment Friday and back to work on Monday.

    Hi Helen,
    I had chemo first,

    Hi Helen,

    I had chemo first, then double mastectomy with 14 lymph nodes removed, and now in rads. My dx was triple negative inflammatory BC. You're right, this can be devastating. But it looks to me like you are not going to let that happen...you're already taking steps to take control. Coming here is a really good step to take. You'll find the people here willing to answer any question, they're the most supportive, caring, open group of people I have ever encountered.

    The most important thing with both chemo and radiation is lots and lots of water. With chemo I started hydrating two to three days before each treatment. For treatment day and a couple of days after I liked icy cold Smart Water, it has electrolytes. I also liked vitamin water.

    I had a chemo class prior to treatments, they said to focus on proteins and calories. Foods that worked for me during the worst of the chemo were baked potatoes, instant mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, carnation instant breakfast (also good in smoothies), plain pasta or noodles, and fresh stone fruits. And it was true for me about eating small amounts more frequently, 6 or more small 'meals' a day.

    With radiation, I am only just starting to have food issues. I'm getting 44 rounds, and the area radiated goes up to my neck to include lymph nodes. This means that my esophagus is 'catching' some radiation. So I sometimes have heartburn, I avoid fatty foods and OTC heartburn meds are keeping that under control. And frequently it feels like I swallowed a pill wrong, and it is 'stuck'. No real issues with food...but drink lots and lots of water. It will help your skin.

    Come back again, let us know how you're doing.

    Hugs,

    Linda

    Hi Linda (Gabe N Abby
    Hi Linda (Gabe N Abby Mom)

    Thank you very much for your response. For few weeks I had been doing "research" on-line, trying to figure out what it is good for me. But I found out that on-line is so much interfering information that it is difficult to make any reasonable - common sense decision. So I am so glad about this forum and sharing experience. THANK YOU.

    Well before I was diagnosed with BC, I was on Dr. Poon diet which is practically modified Atkins diet under doctor's supervision. First faze was very restricted you are OFF from Dairy, Sugar, Salt/Sodium, Fat (only olive oil & avocado) and Fruits. Practically eating pure protein and veggies. I did loose some lbs while I was on it, but most important was that I LEARN to eat 5-6 times a day, smaller portion, healthy food and drink a lots of water (2-3 ltrs/day). But my surgeon told me that I should not be on "diet" as I am depriving my body of nutrience and that I should be trying to eat healthy and not to deprive or "shock" my body. So I want on "regular" diet, just watching what I eat. I read a lots of labels (geee ... grocery shopping takes me forever) and I am kind of off Salt/Sodium & Preservatives therefore I cook more home meals as I can control what it is in them. Plus I love cooking - it makes me happy to spend time in kitchen.

    I was never big on Soy/Tofu, so I do not eat that. One of the research found that Soy is acceptable for Asian's gene bodied, but for most of the Nort American people increase an estrogens level and some of BC need estrogens' for growing. So no soy for me.

    I do not do very well with Dairy as well (actually Pasteurization of dairy product make my stomach ill), so I am off dairy for several years. Also if you read labels most of the product have some kind of dairy in it, so when I am cooking I am replacing dairy with Coconut or Almond milk. Or if I really crave milk I will "treat my self" and get Goat/Sheep milk from local farmer, freshly harvested and without pasteurization.

    I love & recommend to try PURE COCONUT WATER (clear liquid) from young Coconuts is very good as drink - it is sweet, full of electrolytes and taste great. In China town's I can find a whole young coconut for about $1 and you can drink it directly from coconut shell (even my Walmart sell them in Veggies section) or in a pinch you can also find it stores in tetra/juice packs (next to vitamin water on shells) but it cost about $2-3/cup. Health food store have them and also Walmart carry it. Taste well and it is all natural. Just read labels as you do not want added sugar.

    I also have allergies to Penicillin & Tetracycline so I have to watch that I will buy Hormone/Antibiotic FREE Poultry and EGGS (I love Eggs). It is difficult to find it and it can be very pricey, but found that ALDI stores have hormone free Eggs for about $1.25/dozen. With poultry meat it is difficult to find it and very pricey so I switch eating white meat for White Fish (mainly frozen). Price wise it cost less money then Farmer's chicken.

    I notice that you mention that you have a heartburn .... I would recommend to try ALKA-SELTZER. It has a Soda Bicarbonates (neutralized stomach) and Aspin (good for your heart), plus it is much cheaper then regular OTC meds. Also old trick of my grandma was cure heartburn with few bites of APPLE :o) Try it, it is natural and worked for me as well.

    I am not sure how my energy level will be during Chemo & Radiation but I am thinking since I am off from work provably for whole this year, to create a small garden 10'x10' with Herbs, some Veggies & Fruits at my boyfriend's house. I am also trying to convince him to have a few chicken around to have access to fresh eggs.

    Thank you, very much for sharing info with me and all your suggestions. I will try Smart or Vitamin Water (never think about it).

    Take care

    Thank you

    Hello Lynn Smith

    Thank you for sharing your experience. I did a lots of research about cancer, pre-cursors and cure so I can have some "answers" for my mind. There is a lots of info available on-line & libraries, but I am so pleased that people sharing their own experience and "tricks" online.

    I was thinking that WHAT happened to me !!!! I am 37 y/o, do NOT smoke, drink, do drugs, most of my life was medication free.

    Well I think that CANCER is a "society" disease.
    Out bodies are exposed to lots of Pollutions, that we CANNOT control:

    a) Air that we breath in;
    b) Electromagnetic Pollution from all Telecommunication towers, Wi-Fi internets, Cell phones;
    c) Food Chain we cannot control it... Food that we eat is loaded with Chemicals, Hormones, Antibiotics and who knows what else;
    d) Water that we drink is also exposed to all environmental issues;

    ..... So our body eventually get sick, just from "basic" things just living, breathing and eating. .... Very sad.

    Also, when I was child we lived in Europe. Europe is generally very small place, compare to North America and in 1986 when it happened Chernobyl disaster (explosion of Nuclear Power Plant) we lived ONLY about 800 miles from it (well three countries over to Ukraine), so I figure out that ALL of us were exposed for several days of high level of radiation & radioactive fallout. Yes, this is "crazy" idea, but I thinks that this also have some consequences on my illness that I am going thru now.

    I was never big on Soy/Tofu, so I do not eat that. One of the research found that Soy is acceptable for Asian's gene bodied, but for most of the North American people increase an estrogens level and some of BC need estrogens' for growing. So no soy for me.
    I am also not doing well with DAIRY (Pasteurization process does not agree with my tummy). So I READ LABELS carefully and Dairy is HIDDEN in a lots of food (as soy or lecithin).
    Also I watch my SODIUM level intake which is another HIDDEN incredience everywhere (like Cake mixes, Soups etc.)
    So I am cooking more home made meals so I can control intake of Dairy, Sugar, Fat and SODIUM. Plus cooking is my hobby and makes me happy.

    I will check it out your recommended FUSION. I would prefer not to gain any weight, but will see how I feel under Chemo / Radiation.

    I posted bellow also comment that I like very much to drink PURE COCONUT WATER (clear liquid) as it taste great, it has a lots of Vitamins, Potassium, Iron and Electrolytes. I get in it from my local Walmart in Veggie section (full young coconut $1/pcs) or in Tetra/Juice packs at water section ($2-3/cup). Just watch that it is PURE not blend with a lots of sugar added.

    Since I live in Northern hemisphere we are deprived of Sun of most of the year therefore our body cannot make "sunshine vitamin" so I am taking high dosage of Vitamin D3 (5,000 IU daily).

    I am also conducting "research" about Super-Doses of Vitamin C and Vitamin B (complex) - delivered thru IV. It looks like those two vitamins taken IV have ability to help your body heal better and some studies also mentioning that it helps "shrink" tumour. I also looking in to CHELATION therapy - which is used for people exposed to heavy metal poisoning. I know that Chemo is a blend of heavy metals so I am thinking AFTER is finish my chemo treatment try Chelation therapy to REMOVE TOXINS from my body so my body can heal better.

    So will see how I will "tolerate" chemo/rad in future.
    THANK YOU for sharing your experience with me I will try to stay in touch.
    Take care

    Hi Jean T. Szabo -

    Thank you for sharing your experience.

    I am looking forward for some specific info (from Oncology center) in regards of food/diet during Chemo & Radiation. I am just doing some "research" so I can get ready and know what to expect. Comments from all of you are so helpful for me. THANK YOU.

    I like food, I like cooking & eating, BUT I watch what I eat and I read ALL labels (ha ha ... grocery shopping takes me a while).
    I would not mind to loose some wight but my main priority is to get well and beat this disease.

    But how my body will react to treatment is hard to predict.

    a) I read that "metallic taste" coul be "manageable" with a few drops of lemon juice;
    b) Also that a slice of freshly cut Cucumber put in your mouth can "neutralized" your taste buds;

    So I am planning to take a lots of rest. (I am already off from work and will be during my treatment) and I am planning to try ANY reasonable "tricks" to help my body to heal better AND beat this horrible disease.

    Thank you & take care

    Thank you for your response. I am grateful for all info and your "tricks".

    Stay off sugar ... Ohhhhh ... this will be very difficult for me. I have ONLY sugar cravings :o(
    Since I know it I am trying to treat my sugar cravings with a lots of fresh fruit or frozen fruit smoothies/ice-creams.
    But chocolate & ice cream is "calling me" on daily basis.

    I try to eat healthy, cook home made meal and get my fruit/veggies. But I do not know how my body will tolerate treatments and how much my taste buds will change. I do not mind to loose some wait, but my main priority is to get healthy and beat this horrible disease.

    Diet Suggestion
    Hi Helen,

    My best friend was diagnosed with stage 4, Grade 3 BC. In the first year she was experiencing a fast growth. It metastisized to her bone rather quickly and then the growth was intense.
    She read, The China Study, The Cure, and ended up finding The Budwig Diet. She tries really hard to stick to her diet religiously but it is difficult when it doesnt fall in line with traditional eating habits.
    I wanted to pass this on to you for your own research because with her aggressiveness of cancer , she has for the first time in two years had a PET scan that showed little to NO growth finally in her spots. She is contributing this to her Budwig Diet.

    Prayers for you and God Bless!

    That coconut water sounds good.I love coconut.Will check that out. You can get to much of a good thing and need to try others.I love my Mango Peach Fusion though. Better than the caffeine free pop I drink

    You mentioned about a IV for Vitamin D.I was told by my Family doctor I needed to do that since I have osteoporosis.She was going to talk to a doctor about it.Then going to get back to me.He was the only doctor that did that in her pratice.Then BOOM the breast cancer hit me and she has never once mentioned that treatment since.So check that out.She had been up on it but she has distanced me from it now.Maybe she is more worried about my cancer and not sure what to do.

    I was recently told I have 8 kidney stones(CT scan done a year ago) but passed 4 of them the past year.I knew one culprit was milk shakes.And I told my urologist.He told me I need that because of my bones.You can't win. Seems one thing works against another and what drives us crazy.

    I am also going to check out that BUDWIG diet.

    I was 36
    I was an athlete who actually already ate a good diet for most of my life but was a smoker at a young age. I learned through my time of treatments that there were those who took much better care of themselves and still faced their own battles with the very same disease. I soon learned that there were things I had control over and then there were things I did not have control over and whatever it was I had been doing obviously were not working hence the BIG C.
    I think the simpliest of diets with mostly fruit and veggies can only do us good since refined anything especially sugar can't be great. Simplifying life can only be good since we seem to be the ones to complicate it. I do know for sure now how short life is and I try to be present in my own life now.
    I did give myself a present after completing treatments and that was to finally give up those cigs and what a gift that has been. Now I too know what it is like to have my lungs back clear and able to handle the cardio exercising. I can say now I am a real athlete something smoking kept me from truly being or feeling...

    I maintained my weight during 16 rounds of chemo
    I would eat soft foods and no raw foods during the chemo week. (pudding, canned peaches, yogurt, scrambled eggs, blann soups,crackers, and lots of water and unsweet tea. No carbinated drinks)

    Second week, I would eat foods lightly seasoned. (baked chicken, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, fish, and water)

    Third week, (was before chemo) I would eat everything and eat has much as I can. (Steak, spagetti, chicken, fish, vegetables, salad, etc.) Just no soda, or any carbinated drink and I would limit my coffee.

    I worked for me. I did not loose weight. I hope it works for you. God Bless you.

    I've gained about 10 pounds since I started on this Cancer journey & that has been right from the diagnosis in November! I've ate whatever I want or felt like having, good or bad! The first few days of chemo, I do not cook & usually have my husband or daughter bring home take out, whatever might sound good. then I cook regularly after the first 5 days. I've never Not been able to eat untill my first treatment with taxotere last month. Sat down to a buffet and nothing had taste...That was the only time thats happened....probally in my life! lol I've had diareah with taxotere for the first 10 days but not sufficient to lose weight. The interesting thing is in what I used to drink. The sight of any kind of soda pop made me ill just to see the can! so i tried tea, chocolate milk, mostly water. still dont want the pop. 3 treatments left and then I will hope to be on a healthier eating plan!

    When I started chemo I lost
    When I started chemo I lost my sweet tooth and only ate on those days surrounding chemo. The dr told me to be careful how much I'll eat or I'll gain weight. Chemo was the only thing keeping weight on me and I gained a few pounds. Ever since I had esophageal cancer I barely eat....I am very thin. I hate being as thin as I am because I really feel the cold. When I'm not feeling good I don't eat....I can go days without food. I have fluids all the time because they're easier to tolerate =^.,.^=
