JUICING

I'm juicing in the morning for breakfast and it is quite palatable. All raw veggies and fresh fruit. I try to do it every day, but do miss some days.

I do a mixture of things, but almost always use kale, asparagus, spinach, carrots and an apple or pear and some kind of berry. The fruit sweetens it. The other day I added a beet. I usually use about 4 or 5 handfuls of kale, 1 carrot, 5 or 6 asparagus spears, 3 or so handfuls of spinach and always a fruit. I've also added fresh ginger, celery,a couple broccoli florets, an occasional cucumber. The juicer has a recipe book included but mostly gives fruit juicing. That is all well and good, but I'm doiing it for the green nutrients. Asparagus is suppose to be dynamite for cancer. I'd be happy to answer any other question. We bought the juicer at costco for $79 or $89.

I've become dependant on the juice. I'm finding that it makes a difference. On the days I dont juice , I can feel the energy waning. My diet isnt the greatest and I wasnt getting the 5 or 6 servings of fruits and veggies every day. The juice is supplying more than the 5 or 6 servings and my other meals are a compliment to my morning tonic.

Penny, Mine is a "Breville Juice Fountain". It is easy to operate and easy to clean. I cannot recommend any one particular brand or type however my husband did some research and found that many juicers are difficult to clean. This particulart juicer is not, however I have none to compare to.

    Hi natly
I also have a juicer but sadly it's been resting in the pantry lately. I did use it for about 2 weeks and the juice was good. I used mainly carrots and apples, celery. I'm sure I'll use it again-maybe after the holidays. Have you tried making muffins with the pulp yet? I'm glad you're feeling better!

    Very timely post, Natly
My husband just got me a juicer--only it's more like a very high power blender. The difference in this one is it uses the pulp as well. When you put it on, it sounds like a lawn mower! It is the Montel Williams one. I need to go to the grocery store and buy all my fruits and veggies. What's your favorite combo--I'm like you, I need it to be palatable--so I guess the fruit helps?

    Thanks for the post!

We just recently bought a "Jack LaLanne Juicer" at Penneys. It was a $159 one but it was on sale for $99, and it seems to do the job well, takes large carrots and veggies without a lot of chopping, and catches the pulp easily in a basket. My fav drink is cantalope juice, but I'm going to try pineapple maybe mixed with orange, and that might be my next fav. We like it all, even spinach mixed with carrots and celery. I don't like grapefruit by itself but mixed with oranges and juiced I found out I do like it. In another post, I talked about a book which can be cheaply purchased at Amazon titled "The Juiceman's Power of Juicing", by Jay Kordich, which explains juicing very well.

Thanks for the idea of juicing. I eat many vegies or fruits so this sounds like the perfect way to get them into my diet!

Vegetables with Plant Estrogens need to be juiced in moderation

Good to see there is an interest in juicing. I have been juicing for years and have always put almost any fruit or vegtable through the juicer. I have a champion juicer. However I have come to learn that there are vegtables that are high in plant estrogens that one has to be careful about when juicing. Typically when eating these vegtables the fibers can carry the plant estrogen out of the body but when juicing there are no fibers to carry the plant estrogen out of the body and you can absorb high concentration of this estrogen which is what many of us don't want. The plant estrogens are like those in soy. Some of the vegtables to juice in moderation are carrots, beets, celery, fennel ...... I can't remember the others but I do know green leafy vegetables are alright as are cucumbers.

If you are able to get dandelion greens, these are highly beneficial for the kidneys and liver which often get overloaded during chemo. It also stimulates bile production so is good if taken before a heavy meal. I typically do dandelion and apple which is also good for the gallbladder and often cucumber which is loaded with potassium and dilutes the other two.

And watermelon is also great for the kidneys.

    Happy Juicing.

Gabe N Abby mom--I'm trying that smoothie today! Mariam--I have a Montel Williams Health Master which sort of makes a smoothie in that all the fiber is kept in with the liquid, so it's more like a very high power blender. Do you think, in that case, those particular veggies would be okay since my fiber will still be in there? Just wondering. I am definitely going to try to get the dandelion greens--I think I can get that at my Whole Foods Market.

Thanks again. This place is a wealth of information.

    Almost...
my onc said that vegetables were ok, but not to eat a whole lot of them (like juicing) because he didn't want me getting a lot of anti-oxidents while I was undergoing chemo. I got the impression that the mega-vitamin doses would negate the chemo.
But check with your doctors--everybody's protocol is different.

Dee I am finished with treatment. During chemo my onc did not want me to take anti oxidants, green tea, etc. We dont want to feed the cancer.

Now I need energy and the juicing has truly helped me. I was encouraged by my primary physician to juice and my medical onc is fully aware.

Penny my juicer is easy to clean. It does take a bit of time to wash the veggies and add them but I have the time. It was suggested to wash all the veggies beforehand so that all you have to do is put them in your juicer and then clean up.

I juiced dandelion, cucumber and apple everyday during chemo. My oncologist was aware of it but was alright with me doing it because I did it before I was diagnosed. He told me I could continue with anything I had been doing before my diagnosis.

Juicing it is definitely worth it, at least it has been for me.

    Blender
I don't have a juicer but I do have a blender and make wonderful shakes. I have carrot shakes a couple of times a week. I did not do this when I was getting chemo treatment.
