edited March 2014 in Colorectal Cancer #1
I went in for a cyberknife consultation this morning to discuss both the possibility of having cyberknife instead of surgery (anal excision) on my recurrent rectal tumor (now about a 1/2 cm) & I also wanted them to see if I could have cyberknife for 1 or 2 of my lung nodules that seem more chemo resistant.
The jury is still out on the lung nodules- the doctor wasn't prepared to discuss my lung nodules, just the rectal nodule, so she said she would examine my recent scan and see if the size and location of the concerning lung nodules would make me a candidate for it or not & she'll get back to me.
On the rectal nodule, however, I was told that cyberknife would not be the way to go- that they don't like to do it inside the rectum, because it could actually create a fistula (hole) in the rectum and then I'd have emergency surgery and a colostomy (due to the location). I don't even want to risk that- so surgery with an anal excision is the route I'll be going.
Since it's actually not an urgent situation ("just" putting up with symptoms like lots of bleeding), we'll have to wait and see on the timing of it. Having surgery will mean being off chemo, or at least off the Avastin for 6 wks before and another 6 wks after surgery. Also, I go to Los Angeles next week Monday the 22nd for an eval. appt w/ Dr. Lenz. The docs here want to wait and see what he says and if I qualify for any clinical trial or not. If so, that may determine whether I would have surgery now or have to wait until after the clinical trial ends.
I will know more in another week after my appt w/ Dr. Lenz- lots up in the air now.
Oh well- I'm trying to keep my mind busy with all else that I have going on & there's been lots. Had a plumbing flood Friday night, my son is getting his wisdom teeth out this week, stuff going on w/ kids and the house, etc. I'm managing okay & actually don't feel stressed about it. Having other things to do keeps me busy, which is really what I need to feel like a normal mom/person. Now, just to keep the hubby from being stressed about it... he doesn't deal with anything having to do with my cancer well. I'm trying to not talk about it too much w/ him this week- he's losing his mind from being so busy with work-he has deadline for a major paper that has to be filed by tomorrow (he's an attorney) & the amount of work and stress that has been piled on him lately has been awful. Hopefully after this is done,he can slow down a bit for awhile so he doesn't lose his mind. I feel almost like a single parent running the household and kid stuff myself when he's gone or too stressed to deal w/ any of it, which becomes hard when I'm not feeling well. I'm glad I'm on a chemo break last week and this and am feeling better and have a bit more energy (I missed chemo last week cause I had tonsillitis and was on antibiotics & onc wants me now to skip this week again until I see what Dr. Lenz has to say). If I do qualify for a clinical trial (I'm hoping for the one with the drug that targets the cancer stem cells, but there are also a couple of others to consider), there's always a 4 week period of time beforehand that chemo has to be stopped. They do that to make sure everything else is out of your system before starting you on their drug. They want to make sure that for the sake of the study, that they know for sure what is affecting the cancer- making sure it's their drug and not something else we had before. If I don't qualify for anything through Lenz this time, then I'll get my regular chemo of the Gemzar & Xeloda again on the 23rd- that next day after my appt. I think I'd be skipping the Avastin though, in preparation for maybe having this rectal surgery.

Even though I definitely have my issues I'm dealing with, I know that I'm faring better than many on this board, so I count my blessings & want to continue praying for you all-

Hugs,
Lisa

    Hey Lisa
Sorry to hear about your tonsillitis ... seems like it's always something ... huh?

I will be getting Chemo on Monday while you are with Dr. Lenz so just in case I miss it I want to wish you the best of luck!! I bet you're excited about it. I will be hoping that all goes well and that he might be able to slip you into the PRI724 trial.

Sorry the news was not better
Sorry to hear that cyberknife was not an option for the rectal tumor.

I know that waiting, without treatment, can bring uncertainties, but hope you qualify for the trial and that waiting puts you that much closer to starting.

You are such a strong lady and an inspiration to us all.

Praying that you qualify for the trial and that it works wonders on your current issues.

    Hugs,

    Marie who loves kitties

    Appointment
Sorry you didn't get the news you were looking for at your appointment, but at least they seem to be on target with what can and cannot be done. Good luck with your appointment with Dr. Lenz.

    Lots going on
Wow - you have your hands full right now. I hope you can get some help from friends or church members or somewhere. If you do prepare for rectal surgery you need to get some rest and get your strength up.

I hope you qualify for the chemo that targets stem cells. It really looks promising.

Enjoy this mini chemo break, and I hope the tonsillitis is all cleared up.

    Your faith is simply amazing.......
Never a wall that doesn't have a walk around it...I love your tenacity and combined with calm and serenity I can see how you cope so well with all you have going. Hubby needs to write out his feelings, it is so stress relieving...Love to you and yours, Clift

    amazing strength
although we know where that strength comes from, it's still awesomely amazing to see! Sounds like you have an awful lot on your plate, I pray God sends some angels to take some of your load. Remember that you have to take care of YOU before you can take care of them! Sounds like the excision will be the best decision, at will get you to a good place. I continue to pray for you and your treatments, that God continues to care for you as He leads you down the path He has chosen for you. Stay strong and I look forward to hearing how the trials go for you. You are truly a trailblazer, clearing roads for others who come after you, God bless you mightily!

    You continue to amaze and
You continue to amaze and inspire me.

It's really great to hear about a "plumbing flood" when it really is about plumbing and not the usual nasty messy stuff we deal with. I don't think you were making a joke, but it made me chuckle a bit.

    Stay awesome.

    Lisa:
I sure hope you qualify for some of Dr. Lenz' stuff. The stem cell stuff right now looks so promising, not only for colorectal but all cancers. My pesonal doc was talking about it to me a few weeks ago but I didn't understand some/most of what he said when he got into his "medical talk" mode. He said they are right on the edge of cracking the whole cancer thing. Can't come soon enough though.

Working for a lawyer for more than 25 years, I know how crazy they get when important briefs must be done. You have my sympathies, I know how insane they get in the office and hopefully when it is filed he will relax a bit.

Take care and let us know how things go. like Roger said, you are an amazing woman of strength.

    Best wishes for you, Lisa
Lisa, I'm sorry you are going through a lot. I hope things are going well on the appointment day with Dr. Lenz.

Have you checked out nanoknife with UC Irvine? I finally got the name of doctor who may be practicing nanoknife at UCI. His name is Dr. David Imagawa. You can get his email address by searching doctors from UCI web site. Here it is: dkimagaw@uci.edu

    Thinking about you
    Dear Lisa,

I am so sorry that you have had so much to deal with. I know it can be good to be busy and think about other things besides cancer, even when they are things you'd rather not deal with. You are doing an amazing job holding it all together.

I am anxious to hear about your meeting with Dr. Lenz. You are in my prayers. I hope we can get together again soon. Hang in there...it WILL get better.

    Big hugs,

    Sara
