edited March 2014 in Breast Cancer #1
My onc appointment was this morning - last chemo was a week ago, had my blood checks today. Got fluids & a couple shots, white & hemoglobin counts were down. Had to see the Dr for a weird sore i got on my leg after chemo. My husband and I were asking my Dr about the next steps & what my official status is. I was happy and relieved when my doctor told me that "Officially, you are in remission from breast cancer". I also won't be having any scans done for right now, he says there's no need to, and my blood work looks good. Another good thing I found out was that I will be on tamoxifen for 5 years. As you might know, I'm one of those "borderline" triple negative sisters. ER and PR neg with very weak receptors for the other (her2 maybe??? - i cant remember what it's called!) - anyway, my Dr told me that even though I have very weak receptors for that (1-4%) - he still feels that small percentage is enough of a chance for me to get the added protection from tamoxifen. I have no idea on side effects of this or anything because i had just assumed i would not be getting it, so now it's researching that drug. Even if it has crappy side effects, if it's going to give me even a chance of an added protection against this cancer ever coming back in MY body - i'm happy to have it and it's protection.
There's quite a few of us who have wrapped up/are wrapping up chemo and/or rads. YAAAYY!! We did it!!!! Any person who can get through this cancer crap is a hero of mine, for it has indeed been the hardest thing i've ever had to do.
Now, onto dancing.......
*hugs - strentgh - LOVE*

I couldn't be happier for you! What wonderful news from your oncologist :-) I hope you tolerate the Tamoxifen well. My sister took it but she was older than you. She did not have any side effects except hot flashes. Hoping the journey brings you to NED next year......
    How's your mom doing?

    Super, but a question
Heather, sounds like super news you got from your doctor, but it leads me to a question. Why are you going to be on Tamoxifen if you are ER-/PR- ?
    Congrats too on finishing chemo.

I was going to ask the same
I was going to ask the same thing. If you are weak her2 positive it would seem that you would get herceptin. If you are ER positive you would get tamoxifen????? Anyway congratualtions on finishing and good reports. I have been on tamoxifen for 4 months I have hot flashes at night. other wise its been fine, and I was really nervous about it. hope it goes well for you too.

yeah i got my stuff mixed up - its Her2 neg, and one of the hormones i have a weak receptor for. Had to get out the path report earlier to look that one up! Im chalking that one up to chemo fog. It seems like I can't even type straight these days without getting half my letters backward!!

    Triple Negative/Tamoxifen
    First of all CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I was ready to start a thread about being technically triple negative but being recommended for tamoxifen (I still might) but Donna is also getting recommended for tamoxifen. According to her oncologist, there are new guidlines coming out, and although not out yet, everyone knows what they are going to say. Specifically, that weak er/pr positives should receive tamoxifen. Glad to hear that someone else is receiving the same recommendation.

    Again Congratsssssss!!!!!!!!!!!
