Hi,

I'm so anxious at the moment I'm going to explode! Deep breaths here & trying to stay calm and upbeat- but not easy! (daughter's going to counseling this afternoon- maybe I'll listen in and remind myself to do the deep breathing to calm down- lol)
The wonderful dr. who called me Sat. a.m. to tell me not to worry, that we'll get Gemzar approved through insurance this week- he isn't my regular onc. Regular onc is the one that has to put into the insurance. I called insurance today and as of this morning, NOTHING has been submitted for review or approval for me! He left a msg on my cell Friday night (which didn't show up on my messages until Monday, for some reason)- anyhow, his msg. said that he was hoping to have something decided for me by Tuesday. I have called his office and left msgs Tues, Wed re. this and I called again this morning and lft a msg that insurance said nothing has yet been submitted... still no answer or call back!
Ok- there- I got it out! Wait, not yet.... I am majorly pissed off that my onc hasn't bothered to return my call!! Trying to get my garage organized, but can't even focus enough on doing it. I don't even know for sure if he got my messages but, even if he didn't, WHY haven't I heard anything and why has he not submitted anything to insurance yet?? Dr. Lenz from USC and Dr. Fanta from UCSD are great about replying to your email or phone call. It ticks me off that Dr. Helton, the one who "counts" with my insurance, doesn't communicate by email and has only personally called me on the phone one time (this past Friday- the msg I didn't get until Mon) since I've started going to him in June.
In fact, all the messages I've left have been on his nurse's voicemail line. Maybe she's where the communication is breaking down. Hmmmm.... I'm waiting another hour (they're on lunch break), and I'm calling again, this time insisting on leaving either a voicemail or written message directly for the doctor, not his nurse.

Ok- I feel a little calmer now... kids will be home from school soon- I wish I would hear something before then!

Oh Lisa, what a bunch of you know what. It is terrible when our physician's office, doctor or nurse do this. I get so angry too, and you have every right to be. My primary care office is like that, and I have no other place to go as they are the only ones within 60 miles that will take my medicaid card. I usually make the trip into the office to the desk when I need refills or an appointment, as it is so hard to get a call back. If you live close enough maybe a trip in there will get someone on the ball. I feel so bad for you, knowing from your posts what has been happening for you, and the sense of urgency to get on some treatment as soon as possible. Hope you get a response and some reassurance today.
    Best Hopes

    dr. "out of office" today
1:25 pm, Thursday- finally got thru to someone in the office just to be told "Dr. Helton is out of the office on Thursdays". Ugghh!!!!! Why in the h@11 didn't he call me before today?! Maybe it's in the works, as Dr. Fanta had said Dr. Helton should get all 3 drs. to sign the letter, but how hard is it to make a short phone call saying "we're taking care of it"?!

Geez Lisa, sorry you are having so much communication trouble especially since they must know how anxious you are to get something moving. I only had to call George's onc once, at the beginning of treatment, on a Saturday, and we had a return call in less than 30 minutes. Our onc did not call personally but another onc returned the call. George had thrown a fever and I could not figure out why, and didn't know what I could safety give him. Gave him the Tylenol he suggested and a hour or so fever was gone and didnt' come back. Still don't know why it happened. About 2 hours later we received a call to see how things were and were asked a lot of questions. I was very impressed and told the onc. He said there is someone available 24/7 for just these reasons. Take care - Tina

You have every right to be pissed,Lisa
doctor should definitely respond to your call in a reasonable time. Luckily I haven't had such problems with doctors treating me, in fact, at one point when a visiting nurse told my onc I was running a fever, onc called me to ask why I wasn't in hospital or why I didn't call her (I wasn;t taking my temp and I did refuse to let girlfriend call 911 when night of 12/25 thru 12/27 Folfox's oxy was kicking the sheit out of me) Its not like we're calling doc over a sore throat or runny nose!!!
Hopefully you'll get the answer and treatment you desire

    Time to switch?
You would think under these circumstances, the doctor could show you some attention and at the very least call. However, somehow we seem to be getting similar treatment from the onc. you also saw last week. He did not once come by to see my sister the 8 days she was in the hospital! Even after the results of her failed liver resection and numerous calls to his office pleading for him to squeeze her in while she was in LA rather than going home and coming back commuting two hours! Vent away. I am sorry you are going through this, you deserve answers!

    Well Shucks!
I was hoping the insurance company had it in and under review so you could get on this med right away.

This is exactly why I'm going to change gastro's. 9 days of 'leave a message'.... All I wanted was an appointment for my colonoscopy. You have much more serious issues and needs.

I'll pray you hear first thing tomorrow and that this is a done deal.

    Lisa,

I'm so sorry. Don't they understand how important this is to you. I'm sure you are very disappointed that the doctor is not in today. Hopefully he will get in touch with you tomorrow and everything will have been taken care of. You have been through more than alot of people could handle. It's a shame that you have to go through all this anxiety. Big hugs to you and praying you find some peace and comfort (and answers).

    Blessings,

Is it a National Doc Holiday???!!??
Lisa, - you HAVE to be your own Advocate!!!! Sorry to say...I had issues this week - not with my Onc - but the nursing staff...
I knew my onc is off this week...she told me weeks ago...
I went for my weekly Friday lab work last week (and I really felt horrible ALL week last week - thought it was just treatment #10 hitting me hard...so rebound was not normal last week)..got a call on Tuesday at 3:50 pm from the nurse - Kelly (not my favorite since the beginning of all of this - but I just kill her with kindness - hoping it rubs off...NOT!) She is yelling at me to immediately go to the hospital for labs...my counts were critical...

SO of course - I take a deep breath and sigh...then I asked her - "You have had my stat labs since Friday - and I'm just getting a call TODAY???" Well she was off a 1/2 day on Friday - so then I asked "and what about Monday and most of the day today"...she finally backed off of me...went for labs on Tue - she called Wed at 9 am..the counts were better - but still need to go again on Friday...I will call her personally on Friday afternoon - I am suppose to go for #11 on Monday (3/11) and I would like to know who will be deciding weather I get #11 or not...I know Kelly will not be making that decision for me....

Keep up your calls - be prudent with your case....and when you do see your Onc...let him know how disappointed you are with his delay....
    Wishing you WELL!!!

    someone called me
Someone from the office called me back about 5 pm today. It wasn't my onc, since he's off today, but the office case manager. She said she's sorry I hadn't heard anything & said she didn't think it would be any problem at all to order and get the meds I need, but she can't do it without the doctor's order. I said I wanted to come in to the office first thing tomorrow & she said the schedule is full tomorrow, and that maybe Dr. Helton's nurse could get me in anyhow tomorrow if I call at 9:00. In the meantime, she put me in for 10:00 Monday morning just to have something.

Re. changing oncs, as someone mentioned, I would like to change to Dr. Fanta down at UCSD. He's the one who called me Sat. a.m. and has called me and emailed numerous times in the past & he isn't even getting paid for doing anything for me since my insurance didn't let me go back to him. I tried to change to him last spring when I was unhappy w/ my prior onc (who was very nice, but didn't seem to know much at all about colorectal cancer). Anyhow, insurance were not going to allow me to make any change at all unless I changed my primary care Dr. to within UCSD. I didn't want to, but then said I was willing to if that's what it would take. Then they came back with "policy is that you can't change doctors while you're in the middle of treatment". Duh- I'm stage IV & may always be in treatment, does that mean I can never make a change?! Right about that time when I was beginning an appeal, the medical group called me and informed me that I then would actually have to change oncs, but not to the Dr. I wanted. So, I went along with the new required change. Actually, I really liked Dr. Helton & he was more knowledgeable than my original onc and has been willing to coordinate w/ other oncs on my behalf. His real only downfall has been lack of response and communication. But, that's a big problem.
When I went into ER a few weeks back with very high blood pressure, I had first called Dr. Helton's office & naturally just had to leave a message. No response, as usual, so then I called my primary care dr. & they're the ones who told me to go to ER (along with several of you who did also). My oncology office never even knew I had a problem until the hospital faxed them the info on Monday.

I'll be calling them again tomorrow (Friday) a.m. and see if I can get in tomorrow. If not, I may have to wait until Monday. My doctor will hear about this...
I'd really like to change to Dr. Fanta, but I know that will be a fight. I can't deal with more stress at the moment (aka insurance fight) until my own issues are solved here.

Ok- I still have confidence something will break soon, here.

    Take care, everyone!

    Lisa,

I'm glad you finally got a call, but goodness gracious! That's just ridiculous! I think you should definitely let the doctor know how upsetting it has been for you. Let them have cancer and be worrying about treatment-I bet they wouldn't want to wait!

I'll be praying for good things!

Remind your current ONC that you are not suposed to have stress and he is giving you alot also ask him about a referal (sp) to the Doc. you want to go to explain that you don't feel that you are getting the treatment that you feel would work and that it's nothing against him it is that the other ONC is prepared to give you that treatment ...if you are refered by one to the other the ins. may not be able to stop it.

    Just a thought
    Lisa,

Could this be a problem with your onc's staff ? One of the reasons I left my first onc was because the staff constantly caused problems. Mostly insurance issues.

There is no excuse for someone not to call you back in a timely manner. Don't they understand that this s**t means life or death to us. If they don't, then make them understand. Does your onc have a PA ? Someone should always call back within a couple of hours.

Onc's make money by poisoning us with chemo. They should be kissing our rear ends to treat us.

    This just pisses me off.

    John

    Friday mid morning
Still no call back by 10 a.m. today...I finally called the office again. After being told "no appts today- Dr. Helton is fully scheduled- his nurse is busy with a patient- you can leave a message on her voicemail..." I went off! I told her how it is absolutely horrible how there is no communication in this office and that I have left messages every day this week and I am not about to just leave another message! I was put on hold a while, then the receptionist came back and said she just spoke to Dr. Helton and his nurse. She said Dr. H. said he didn't even know I had called at all and that he will be putting the order in today if I am in agreement with doing that, but that he'll end up having to appeal it because it's not covered by insurance. Duh! I knew that would be the case, which was why it was so urgent to put in the request to insurance back on Monday or Tuesday. BUT I then shared that I spoke w/ someone at insurance yesterday and they told me it COULD probably get approved, but the dr. has to put in the request with evidence of need in order for them to do anything. She then told me someone would definitely call me back by the end of the day to let me know what is happening. I made an appt.w/ Dr. Helton for Monday morning. Hopefully this will be in the works today, but I definitely want to discuss things with the Dr. I guess I can't expect him to actually call me, since he never does, so I'll just have to show up in the office in front of him. It just doesn't seem like I should have to have a scheduled appt for this- there's no reason he couldn't have started this process earlier, then told contacted me about it.
I have too many things going w/ picking up kids from two different schools and other activities this afternoon, and I think I've done all I could re. this issue already, so I'm going to either go exercise or take a short nap- too much stress. I think I'll put both phones right by me and go with the short nap. Maybe exercise when I wake up before getting kids from school!

    Hi Lisa,
It's too bad that nice people have to get "gritchy" to get something done. You have been more than patient. Maybe this Dr is worth the trouble though. Sometimes even though they are really good, they are too busy to handle it all. Or the "nurse" didn't tell him????Hmmm...Very frustrating but hope the appt on Monday goes well and you will get something going very soon. Prayers are with you. Hope you're having a good weekend!

    CALL EVERY FLIPING DAY
Lisa.. Time to be a bug and crawl up some (You know what's). I'd call EVERY DAY!! Every person on his staff will know me by my first name even if I had to call 3 times a day. I would start calling my insurence people too. Be that bug and get results or crawl deaper. Sometimes that's what I had to do in Hospice but I ALWAYS got what I needed for the patients.

Sit down and call, Call, CALL
