3 yrs in remission of breast cancer then AML
breast cancer is much easier than what i have right now, i am still shocked and still wondering if tamoxifen has something to do with it, i am 44 years old, i've had mastectomy and hysterectomy in the last 3 years since i was diagnosed, haven't even had a chance to move on as a normal person since and then this ....
is there anyone out there who can relate to this?

Hello, I have not had 2 different cancers, but others who post here have. I am so sorry that you are dealing with leukemia now, so soon after beating bc.
Tamoxifen is not considered chemo. Many women here have or are taking it and can tell you more, though. I wish I could give you more information myself, Mauveb2k. Just keep in mind that you are already a survivor. You beat breast cancer, and you can beat this.0 -

I do believe we have some multiple cancer survivors on this board - and they will surely chime in once they see your post. And I am appalled to hear your oncologist didn't want to say whether tamoxifen counts as chemotherapy. Opinions vary on the topic, I realize, but an oncologist should at least have one of the opinions and be able to explain it!0 -

I am so sorry that you have a 2nd cancer. Damn the beast. I do not have a second one, but I am appaled by your Onc. not giving you all the info on tamoxifen and chemo. I would seek out a second opinion and talk to another onc. I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. I'm glad you found us here.

I did not have such a difficult 2nd cancer but I have had 4 different cancer during the past 9 years. All very treatable and I am going strong. Our Kathi will post I am sure (she is in Holland right now) and tell you about her 2 cancers. Her story is inspiring. Just know that you beat this once and you can again. What was your diagnosis on the breast cancer? That may be why you didn't have chemo then. I don't know if there is a link to luekemia and breast cancer. My prayers are for you to beat this and to move forward with a healthy happy life.

Im sorry that you are battling against cancer again. Your onc sounds about as good as mine, which frankly they suck. Im looking into another one right now. Know that you did the right thing by posting on this site. The support you get is wonderful. I will pray for you and stay strong.

I am so sorry you are going through yet another battle.......try to stay strong.......easier said than done, I know! And shame on your oncologist!
Did you have radiation following your breast cancer surgery? Radiation has many side effects short term and long term...One of them is a secondary cancer and leukemia is one of them. According to all the information I have on radiation, leukemia usually develops, withing a few years of exposure with the risk peaking 5-9 years later after the radiation exposure.
All this information is from a book from the American Cancer Society which my radiation oncologist gave me to read. I start radiation sometime the end of September. I have two chemo treatments to go. I am more afraid of the effects of the radiation than the chemo.

Welcome to the bc board,but I'm sorry that you have been diagnosed again with a different type of cancer.
Tamoxifen is a drug used as hormone therapy for Estrogen positive,Progesterone positive mainly pre menopausel bc patients. I call it an estrogen blocker because my tumor was "hormone-fed" and I am hoping that tamoxifen will lessen my chances of a recurrence of bc.
I,like the others can't believe that your onc couldn't explain to you what tamoxifen is-it's pretty common!0 -

isn't it that somethings that are supposed to help us can cause us problems long term (even other forms of cancer)! But no one knows what will happen tomorrow to any of us including those who have never been diagnosed with cancer. It's like taking any kind of medication these days-all of it comes with side effects,even asprin if you take too much!
Please any of you,we all have a choice in the treatments that we have,but don't let what could happen stop you from getting treatments that could end up saving your life! Not to say that I'm an expert on bc,I'm definately not...,and like I said,we're all different and we can all make our own choices,but I've had 4 AC treatments,rads and am now taking tamoxifen-and I don't regret any of it. I know that recurrence is a possibility and even other kinds of cancer for me-but I am still living life and enjoying it today and right now,that's all that matters to me!0 -

So sorry Mauve about what has happened to you. It just isn't fair. Your oncologist should explain anything and everything to you, that is his job. If I were you, I would seek a 2nd opinion from another oncologist. Good luck to you!

i think i remember my 0ncologist saying there was a 1 in 300 chance of patients treated with taxol to get leukemia, but i may have been mistaken. i was pretty shook up through most of this. i wasn't told about the radiation. maybe because it's still in the distant future for me!0 -

So sorry to hear about your leukemia. I am a little confused though. You said that you are 3 years out from your BC. Where is your Medical Oncologist you had for your BC? It sounds as if this is not the same Oncologist. I will be with mine for the rest of my life. And if this is a new Oncologist, you absolutely need to have your records transfered so they know what treatments you had and your history!! And I have never heard of an Oncologist not knowing about Tamoxifen unless it was not having chemo that he was taken aback about.
I would possibly consider another opinion. Can you go back to your original Oncologist you had for your BC? I wish I could be of more help.

A secondary cancer is a risk when receiving radiation; I remember being informed of the risk. But I agree with Patty that we shouldn't let fear of side effects from treatment keep us from fighting the beast with the weapons available to us.0 -

hello pammy, i was endorsed by my breast cancer oncologist to another oncologist who specializes in AML theyre both oncologists from the same hospital havent talked w/ my breast cancer oncologist since the time we found out that i have AML, i've thought about it and figured it out by searching on the computer, that my breast oncologist is not quite adept with AML as he specialized only on breast cancer cases0 -

never had chemo nor radiation, i had only mastectomy and lumpectomy then tamoxifen which i'm supposed to take for 5 years, i'm still wondering and a lot of questions right now, however, there's really nothing else i could do but just keep on fighting and go with the flow, thank you and god bless0 -

I am so sorry Mauve. Noone should have to go thru what you are now. Perhaps, you should seek a 2nd opinion? An oncologist is who we look to for help with our questions and treatment.

I am so sorry Mauve. I have only had bc this year. I am sure that someone on here will reply to your post that have had more than just one cancer. There are several on here.
