Nervous, 1-year follow up approaching

I was diagnosed with Stage I RCC and had a full nephrectomy in March, 2006. I have my 1-year follow up in 2 weeks and am getting nervous. I came here to read postings but the 1st one I read was another stage I survivoring talking about a recurrence. YIKES! Anyway, I am hoping for good results.

I have some pain where my kidney used to be though it's minimal. I read another posting where someone talked about also having ovarian cysts. If you're still on this site, let me know what happened when they removed them. I too have ovarian cysts but they are not recommending removal, just monitoring.

I was told by my husband's surgeon that the recurrence of kidney cancer in the other kidney ws less than 1 percent. However, it could migrate to another part of the body such as the lung but this was less than 25 percent possibility. Best wishes.

Hi KCFighter, I will be a Kidney Cancer Survivor for 8 years in April!!! I still have some discomfort on that side but attribute it to scar tissue. I too have ovarian cysts and cysts on either side of my spine. So far they have been no cause for concern. I am in the process of setting up an appointment for a ct scan for peace of mind, but feel I'm fine. I will be back to tell you how the ct scan came out...I'm pretty sure it will be good and add to your hope that 7years from now you will be writting the same thing to someone that is worried. Take care, and let me know how your tests came out.

I am coming up on my 3 year anni and am glad to hear of your 8 years. I have pain still, but they say it is scar tissue also. They are watching mets to lungs, but like I said, they are WATCHING. Hugs

Hi. I might be that Stage 1 survivor you mentioned who had the recurrence. My recurrence occurred nearly 5 years after the initial diagnosis/surgery and it really came out of the blue. The odds of someone with Stage I having a recurrence at all, much less so many years later, are really low. For me it's been a year since the recurrence (partial lung removal) and so far so good. So YOU hang in there! Let us know how your checkup came out.

Hi Ibinsmp - I've been away from this site for a while. Guess that's a good sign in a way. I was wondering how you are doing? It is unusual that you would have a recurrence with a stage 1 RCC. Do you know your sub-type (Clear cell, chromophobe, etc.). I understand the sub-type plays a role in recurrence rates as well. Also, the nuclear grade (1, 2...)?? I've been clear for 2-1/2 years. I go in for my 3 year in March. After my 2 year, my doc moved to checking me just once a year. I have to admit, now that I'm 6 months out from my last check...I've started thinking about it. I'd normally be heading in for my scans & blood work about now. I'm holding hope that all will turn out well. Let me know how you are doing.
