I had a mastectomy (4/02) and then chemotherapy from 5/02 through 8/02. My sense of smell is all but gone. I either don't smell things or I smell them differently than others. (I've got two kind of generic smells that kick in for many different things.) We did a CT scan of my head/sinuses last week. No tumor or abnormalities. Has anyone experienced ongoing olfactory sense damage from chemotherapy? I'm sure that's when my sense of smell troubles started. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks. Elaine

Hi there, I did chemo 26months ago and my sense of smell went crazy. I couldn't even wash my clothes with detergent. Too strong. Even now I can't stand the smell of a lot of things. It does seem to be getting better. My father-in-law did major chemo 6 yrs ago and he lost his sense of taste and his sense of smell for a long time, it has now returned but still not like it was. Hope this helps.

Hi, had chemo and lost my sense of smell, a lot of things smelled different , my tastebuds were gone too. Had a metallic taste in my mouth for a long time during and after chemo, I put salt on and in everything, ate hot and spicy food, now I am fine and all is back to almost normal. Finished chemo in October 2002. Still certain smells get to me. Hope this helps. Emmi

    lost sense of smell

I had chemo 2/2012 thru 5/2012.  I have completely lost my sense of smell since...it is now 12/2014.  I cannot smell anything...burning or cooking food in the kitchen, perfumes...anything.  frustrating to no end, and I am wondering if it will ever come back...but at the same time, I am smelling things no one else senses...foods have a specific smell that totally throws me off "my feed".
