in Ovarian Cancer #1

As part of my mastectomy and reconstruction surgery, the plastic surgeon repaired 3 hernias. He used a sheet of mesh (my husband and I joke, he went to Ace Hardware and bought window screen). I thought I was told the mesh dissolves. I had the surgery June 2013. I am having pain across my belly by my lowest rib and across my lower hip. Could the mesh be slipping?

    Hi  as I'm sure you already know-- after any surgery -- pain should always warrant a visit to the doc  could be the mesh - infection etc . or any minor problem - klet the doc decide if there is a problem. so if not - you don't have to worry anymore

    Mesh Question

    Hi:

    I too had a hernia repair during another surgery I was having.  It was so large that my gyne/onc had to call in the Specialist team to repair that.  I have a huge piece (15 x 19 cm) of gore-tex mesh in me.   That was back in Feb of 2010.  I did and still do at times get little sharp pings of pain.  Also around my navel it feels funny to touch.  I did and have brought this to my gyne/oncs attention.   What was explained to me was that healing and scar tissue could cause these things.  But as always, bring this up to your doctor.  I have had other abdominal severe pains and was told it had nothing to do with my cancer.   If I were to get them again (I was getting them every couple of months), I was to have it x-rayed to see if it was a partial blockage.

    Anyway, i agree with your husband   its like having a small screen!   lol

    by the way my mesh didnt dissolve    they can see it on scans along with staples from surgeries

    None of my scan reports comment on the mesh.

    However, I do know it was tacked down in many places - don't see how it could move.  The standard still applies - when in doubt about a pain or discomfort, ask your dr.

    Oncologist

    Just back from oncologist and the pain is my hernia and mesh. The hernia has attached to the mesh. Off to physical therapy.
