Adriamycin leak from port

Options

Has anyone experienced a leak of Adriamycin from port?  Six days aftet chemo I developed a spreading red rash, itches a great deal and skin is starting to flake off.  I've been put on a 10 day regiment of antibiotics.  My port was not used for yesterday's infusion.  Will see surgeon for possible port removal if the rash isn't gone after antibiotic treatment.  I've been searching web but not a lot of info re ramifications of port leaking or long term effects of Adriamycin damage to tissue.  Any sharing of similar situation  and outcomes would be appreciated.

    Like chemo isn't nasty enough

Like chemo isn't nasty enough already.  Don't have any knowledge or experience with this, but know you are in my heart and prayers.

    The Drs are saying that

The Drs are saying that Adriamycin leaked out 6 days after infusion?  It would not have still been present in the port that long.  It is infused through the port and then if no other Chemo was also infused at that time, it would have been flushed with saline and the heparin block put in.  Everyone I have heard who developed skin issues from A getting into the skin have had quick reactions not days later though it did progress.

It is quite possible to get other infections after any port access just as after any vein access as the skin is compromised by it being opened.

    Hi.
    I am from the uterine

    Hi.

I am from the uterine board, but saw your post.   One other thing comes to mind about your post.   Did they use steri strips and/or adhesive tape around your port?   I have noticed that some times I get really inflammed skin from steri strips, adhesive tape and sometimes electrodes  - I get an actual burn mark from electrodes.   When I had my port removed, I think it was four or five days later I had blisters where the steri strips were and redness.

I hope it goes away and hope you find what caused it.

    My best to you.

    Port Leaks?

Looks like joined Feb 3rd and havent been back since then............hope you return and let us know how you are doing Frk....      I never had a problem at all with my port and had it in for years...  But I do remember my Oncologist telling me that one of the reasons he wanted me to have a Port was because if any of the Chemo leaked it would be TERRIBLY painful.   I hope they have fixed your problem and sending prayers for strength and courage.  Glo

    Port

Just wondering why you have had your port in for years. My sister has been cancer free for nine years and still has her port. I would have thought that would be a relief to have that reminder removed.  I have read that it is important to start living again and that seems like a constant reminder.
