fluid draing into abdomen

Options

Hello Ladies,

I had a complete hysterectomy and 8 lymph nodes removed on 9/2/14 due to stage 1B uterine cancer. Two weeks after my surgery I started to have fluid drain into my abdomen. As of today I have had 7 Paracentesis drains and 1 Thoracentesis when the fluid soaked into my lungs. I spent 5 days in the hospital when the fluid was in my lungs. They did CT scans, MRI, did tests for blood clots, check out my heart and numerous blood tests. They did see that my liver was enlarged and had a spot which turned out to be fatty tissue. They also saw that my Omentum was enlarged, but they could not figure out where the fluid is coming from. Yesterday I had a laparscopy in my abdomen to biopsi the omentum and look at the areas they removed the lymph nodes from. He did not see any cancer and where the lymph nodes were removed were all healed. He still did not find where the fluid is coming from. Next step is to see a liver specialist to find out why my liver is enlarged. I just completed my 4 sessions of vaginal radiation last friday.

Has anyone had a similar situation?

I am very happy that I found this wonderful site!!

Patty

    Patty welcome to the site

i am sorry you had to find us because of your diagnosis.  You have had quite a lot happen to you since your surgery.  I do not have any answers for you about the fluid accumulating in your abdomen and lung.  I hope you get some answers from your liver specialist.  You will remain in my prayers.  In peace and caring.   Please let us know what you find out.  Ladies on the Ovarian board have had fluid in their abdomen drained.  You might want to post over there, too.

    Hi Patty:
    So sorry to hear

    Hi Patty:

So sorry to hear all that you have been through.  I am sorry but I haven't been in your situation but wanted to respond to your post.    What type of hysterctomy did you have? (DaVinci or traditional?)   I am surprised with doing a complete hysterectomy that they did not remove your omentum since they already knew you were a stage 1B uterine cancer.   They should have also removed your appendix.    Of course, many physicians are different and have different protocols.

I really hope they find the cause of your fluid build up.

    My best to you,

    Kathy

    Mass

I've had a mass in my right paracolic gutter since late May.  The paracolic gutters are on either side of the spine and drain fluid out of the body.  My gyn/onc recently decided that the mass was very unlikely to be a recurrence of cancer since it hasn't grown.  When I first went to his office after this was discovered (by my family physician who did a CT scan on me for abdominal pain which happened to be on the opposite side), his nurse practitioner told me the mass could be fluid from having my lymph nodes removed.  I haven't needed any drains, so yours is undoubtedly worse than mine.  I remember after my mother had breast cancer, she had a fluid collection (edema) in her arm from her surgery.  The nurses in her nursing home weren't supposed to put a blood pressure cuff on that side, but they often did by mistake.

I've had a cyst in my liver for years now which is thought to be benign as it hasn't changed at all.
