Dealing with Liver Cancer

Hello everyone, My dad is battling liver cancer. We just found out a month ago. He had hep C and cirrhosis of the liver proir to the cancer diagnosis.  The doctors really believe the cancer came from another source and spread to the liver. Whats really hard right now is that my dad's mental state. His mind goes and comes. He is very confused and delusional at the same time. He also complains about pain on his right side of his rib area all the way to his hip. He is very weak and needs assistance with everything. Now all of this began about a month ago. Before then he was very much self sufficent. He use to drive and everything before the diagnosis. He was very independent. My question is, what should I expect in the future? Is the confusion normal? Thanks in advance for your help......

    Dear mdennis30,

I am sorry to hear about your dad.  My husband also has stage 4 cirrhosis and was recently diagnosed with liver cancer.

The confusion you described is called Hepatic Encephalopathy.  I've included a link for you here http://he123.liverfoundation.org/ where you can learn more about this condition.  There are things that can be done to help your dad with the mental confusion.

    Peace.
