Wondering if it has happen

Options

Hi guys just wondering if this happened .When they operated they took part of the tounge then graphed mucle from my thigh to rebuild tounge. As they did they tied it to bottom of jaw.Now for the question. When I seen my doctor last friday and he finally pulledthe trach tube we started to talk about getting teeth. He said lets hold off for 6 months.During the operation they split my jaw down the center to work on tounge. He said it needs more time to fuse back together and heal. Then he kind of smiled and said besides I still have some work to do.Now that's the question does anyone have any idea what he is talking about?Am thinking maybe he is going to go in and give me more tounge movement to swollow better or now that the muscle is growing to the tounge he is going to cut away the graph altogether..

    Agree with DJ

Tell the nurse you got home and got to thinking about what he said and ask for more detail. I can tell you that my surgeon said implants could not be addressed until 6 months post tx. so, I believe, that part is pretty standard.

    Guessing

they tied your tongue down to keep it from moving too much. I have my tongue tied down but that is because I have had alot of muscle and tissue removed under the tongue as well as the right side of the tongue. I would have a large cavity otherwise where food could be trapped. Doesn't matter though as I have to puree all my food with vitamix as even small pieces of onion or fruit get stuckin my throat. Ask your doctor and bring a list with you so you dont forget what to ask. There are some doctors who are very vague in their answers so you have to pull it out of them

    good luck

I have been lucky can eat

I have been lucky can eat most food but have to chop it up to swollow. The only time I couldn't was during radiation and used my peg tube. One of the big reasons I like my doctor is that he is pretty staight forward but he likes to do things in steps. Was hoping to have trach taken out over a month ago and he said ahh lets wait till all treatments are over and be safe in case you need it.Before that it was to help suck anything out instead of trying to hack it out.But this last visit he said he really likes the way everything is going so he has me more curious then anything.

    Hate That

I hate it when they make comments like that and they just hang in my mind until I find out what they meant.  I'd call and ask him.  If they are going to make annoying, nebulous comments, they are going to have to deal with the questions arising from them.  Good luck.

    When talking with my

When talking with my radiation doctor today I asked him if he might know.He said his best answer would be that within the next 6 months before teeth he wants to go back in and trim and shape the tounge alittle bit.

    no clue

about the "more work to do" but I would definitely ask.

My husband had to had all teeth removed before radiation: it was a year after radiation ended before the oncologist gave us the go ahead on getting teeth.  I understand your impatience but even jaws that have not had surgery take quite a while to settle out after radiation.

Patience is difficult but necessary.  Also, our major medical kicked in more than half on the dentures because the need was caused by cancer/treatment.  Don't forget to ask because we assumed it wouldn't pay - I asked, anyway, and was pleasantly surprised.

I also had my teeth pulled but during surgery.Would like to have the dentures but my surgen has guided me pretty well so far.And if his saying he has more work to do is trimming and helping me as far as eating and speaking using my tounge more I'm all for it.He does take things in steps..
