Symptoms after tumor removal

My Brother-in-law had an extraction surgery about 3 weeks ago. He was able to begin eating and chewing food in the last 8-9 days. When he chews he is getting a shooting pain that goes from his ear into his jaw. The pain starts just before he puts offd in his mouth and stops about 8-10 min. into eating. It is on the side of the extraction. The tumor and the left tonsil, Lymph nodes on both sides and a good bit of tissue was removed.The surgeon did also remove the nerve that runs down into the shoulder, but that was the only nerve removed. Has anyone had pain like this after an extraction of the tumor?

    Hello Cruerocks !

    I always tell people to check with their doctor first.  Your brother-in-law had quite a bit of work done on him, including a nerve removed.  Yes, I would say things are still healing.  I had pretty similar pain for awhile after my resection and node removal.  It takes awhile, give it some time.  And again, if it is bothering him alot or severe pain have him contact his onc's.  Katie

    Ask him to talk to his physician about his symptoms

    He may have something called first bite syndrome.  

    Or the trigeminal nerve could be affected.  In any case, he is suffering and there may be some relief for him if they can diagnose it.

     There are a lot of nerves in the head and neck area and it does take time for them to heal or develop new pathways.  Hope he can get some relief soon.

    Thank you, this information is helpful. What ever we can do to help him feel as good as he can at this point is the goal. This will help him start somewhere to figure out what might be going on. I will pass this along to him. Thanks again.
