in Colorectal Cancer #1

I had an appointment with the Tumor Board today for two issues.  A recent PET scan indicated a new tumor in my rectum and two additional liver mets.  The surgeon indicated that the rectal tumor can be removed via Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM).  I have been told this is a day surgery.  Just curious if anyone has had this surgery or has any words of wisdom.   The liver mets will be addressed with radioablation.  I am scheduled for a consult in two weeks.  I am excited about this plan and very happy to be off chemo for the time being.

    I'd really encourage you to read these links before having the mets removed via radioabalation.

    No words of wisdom,

    just wanted to wish you good luck, and say that I'm glad that you have a plan in place for dealing with the new growth.  May it be effective and get you back on the road to remission!

    I have been told that resection is the best option for the liver met - I tried hard to have microwave ablation to my liver met but the doc insists on resection - the surgery was postpone for some reason or other as the dr was busy / emergency / his trip to japan etc  - so now we have rescheduled it for mid April sometime.

    I had a liver resection on March 5, 2013.  It is a great option, I am happy that you have it scheduled.   Mine went well and I recovered quickly, I returned to work the first week of April.   I think the thing that surprised me most was the length of my scar.  162 staples long!   At this point it isn't an option for me.

    Ask for microwave ablation

    There seem to three or more types of ablation popular now - radio frequency, irreversible electroporation and microwave , apart from cryogenic ablation etc.

    depending on the location etc of the tumor they may recommend a type of ablation - I did have both Rfa and ire so far - this time they  were to do a microwave ablation - and it was changed to resection ( yet to do it )

    i beleive that that these days microwave ablation has an edge over Rfa - u may also want to discuss this with the doc - pl also research this before u Go. 

    Sometimes he may recommend what equipment hospital has and what he is used to doing rather than what suits ur current treatment needs - so may be u would like to discuss it in depth. My research this time showed than MWA had a better response than RfA - had I known this earlier I would have certainly tried to persuade the doc for it.
