My moms diagnosis sounds a lot like your husband. 9 years ago she had epiglottis SCC. She did radiation and chemo and has been in remission for 9 years. January 13 she started having trouble swallowing so ENT did biopsy on pharyngeal wall and it came back SCC. He then referred her to ENT in Houston med center where we met Dr. Karni and he set up Robot surgery for this past Friday march 8. So march 8 she goes into surgery and 45 minutes later we are getting called in a private room to tell us my moms cancer has spread to cervical of esophagus. We then were sent home with a follow up appointment on Thursday the 21 to discuss possible chemo to postpone her life a little longer. I am just so sad and scared for her. I do not want her to get to the point that she starts gasping for a breath due to tumor growth. How is your husband? If you can help me out with what to expect please respond. Thank you and prayers for your husband too.

    Your mother

I sent you a rather lengthy reply.  Does she had a stoma?  If not, they could do a trake to help your mother's breathing.  Since my husband has a stoma due to laryngeal cancer, his breathing shouldn't be affected by the tumor.  Now the lung cancer could be something else and he did experience some shortness of breathe the other day when he was working out in the yard.  Something he hasn't had (shortness of breathe) since his surgery in March 2011.

    sharon, i also have a

sharon, i also have a permanent trake due to the same type of cancer.  I've had it for 13 months now and not really doing much better with it now than i did when i first got it.  how does your husband deal with it.  does he have to suction a lot?  can he leave the house without his suction machine?  I can't so i don't leave the house.  havin this trake is the hardest thing i've had to deal with thru this entire cancer trip.  i was told the need for suction will go away but i don't see any signs showing that.  how about your husband?  does he use it less than he use to?

    God bless,
