On the weekend plans post, Pepe and I got to discussing Wagner's Ring Cycle. I was even thinking about for this weekends fantasy, including going to Sydney to catch the Ring Cycle there. Now, this week PBS is airing the Cycle, one performance each evening! I'm about to spend the next four nights in melodramatic heaven!

hahah we operatic nutbars should stick together.

Our first live broadcast from the Met comes to our local cinema. It is Donizetti's Elixir of Love....a little lighter fare than the ring...

good luck with that my friend.....

Down in Phoenix, they have a few select theaters that will run several opera each season. Here in Utah it seems that most people think the word "Opera" should be followed by Winfrey.

Lasts airing of Das Rheingold was absolutely magnificent, performed on a set which required wire work in several scenes. The set would change for each act, while the performers were still on stage and the whole production was without a break or intermission. Just think "Cirque d'Soliel goes to the opera."

I'd love to see Otello, my second fave from Verdi (after Aida) but featuring the greatest villain of all time, Iago! If I ever got into acting, that's the role I'd want the most.

Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, NY is a small, dedicated opera house that has world class performers (Derborah Voight last year, several big names (but I've blanked out on them) this year.) It is a summer only venue, and this year, I saw Lost in the Stars (Weill) and Aida (Verdi). Loved them both. Need to check our plans, but we may get to Otello if we decide to go to NYC the night before our luncheon. I'm loving opera more and more.

We come down, too, and haven't yet planned our opera season.

Sorry, Pepe, I'm not a big Wagner fan. But I love Bizet, Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi, Mozart, and many others. We actually flew to Paris for the opera a few years back (Charpentier's Louisa) - o, I loved it! It was also my re-entry into life, a celebration of finishing chemo.

Wagner is a little heavy for me. If I am going to listen to heavy, I want the cannons and Tchaikovsky! lol Still dark, but the Cannons!

I've always loved the big, epic stories as well as Norse mythology. That's what first lured me into Wagner. Yeah, he put in a couple of hours into each opera that could have been left out and still made a compelling story. But, since more than a couple of my past professors have commented that I tend to "over write" (but always to their pleasure) I reckon there's no room for me to cast stones.

rick I go to the live broadcasts from the New York Met....in Canada these are broadcast live on Saturdays at one o'clock....the theatre chain is Galaxy.....

best seats in the house are $22......so way way cheaper than going to the opera...

the live transmission is fantastic....sound is good and you get to see Rene Fleming up close....:)

I am jealous! I can't get such cultural activities where I live. I can get up front and personal versions of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo!"
