It's official I'm 2 wks out from my last radiation. Still very difficult. I'll have a good day then a not so good day. I'm not getting no where near the calories I shld be getting and that concerns me. I rarely eat or drink I take advantage of the times that I can eat lately there hasn't been any. Every time I eat or drink anything with milk I break out into a rash and start itching. Is it possible I developed an allergy to milk?

    Today.
Im 4 weeks out today. I still don't have any saliva or taste and my throat ..actualy
The roof of my mouth at the back is still burned white and sore upon swallowing,
And little blister like bumps on the back of my tongue but thats it --- nothing else is
Wrong so it does get better......my day goes a bit like this..
Get up have a cup of tea and some cereal, mid-day a high calorie, high protien
shake (about 800 calories) then for the evening meal I take the Lortab for pain
In the throat and then have a normal dinner, tonight was filet mignon, baked
potato and veggies with gravy on the side ( I try to eat normal foods, meat, fish or
chicken everynight) , then late on at night another shake.
I've only started doing this the last couple of weeks because things have gotten better
So like I said you will soon be doing and eating the things you like.
Even though I have no taste or saliva I'm still eating and praying they will return
    SOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!!!!!!
I lost 45lbs from November to now so now I'm trying to maintain the weight (215)
By the way I had 3 bottles of Bud Light yesterday but don't tell my wife.

    God bless
    Tonsil Dad,

    Dan.

It does sound like you've developed a sensitivity to
milk. Maybe try and see if you can drink the lactose free kind...if that will make a difference. Also, I've heard that the soy milk products taste good on cereal (don't know about drinking them plain).

Dan...you amaze me...meals fit for a king, I swear :)....I won't mention the three beers, but gotta say they sound so good...

Soy milk is very good, plain, vanilla, or choc. I drink it and put it on cereal every day.

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back....
Kinda like a jig....it plumb evades me....

Recovery is slow......measured weekly and monthly, not daily for sure. So in that respect, you are right on time.

But..... you need to take in both calories and water, by whatever means you can.

Try Soy based, lactose free, whatever..just get it in you.

As for the allergy, who knows, you're body is fighting with everything it has, so a lot of things are going on right now.

    Keep Fighting ...

    Best,
    John

    Calorie count
my recovery is slowly progressing. I still havent quite healed the mouth ulcers, and I am 10 weeks post rads. I can eat some solid foods, but not nearly enough, so I carefully count calories, and supplement with ensure to be certain I get enough. Breakfast this morning was one egg, a small portion of hash browns , a piece of sausage and an ensure. Then some magic mouthwash to calm my mouth down. Weight is stable. Its just gonna take more time. You can do it. Figure out your workaround, and keep your weight up.

    Those mouth ulcers were the
Those mouth ulcers were the worst. I got them early on but not too bad, they went away and then came back toward the end of rt with a vengeance and stayed with me for a while. I would think you will see some pretty fast improvement any day. When things started to heal they really healed fast like a day or so.

I have not gained any weight back that I lost during treatment. I feel fine and my BMI is 22 so that is good. I was borderline overweight at a BMI of 25 when I started treatment. Food just isn't as appealing as it once was and I think I am eating less but healthier, like almost no red meat and more vegetables. Seems like obesity is in the news alot lately whether it be health costs or airline regulations.

I prefer Almond milk over soy milk
The problem with soy milk is the chemicals and pesticides used on them. Most soy beans are geneticall modified so if it doesn't say organic or no GMO it's loaded with junk. I prefer the taste of almond milk and prefer it on cereal. I use unsweet but Jim likes the sweet. It comes in plain, vanilla and chocolate, has natural calcium and vitamin E.

As for lactose free milk, it won't make any difference in allergies only lactose intolerant people. Lactose is a sugar found in milk that doesn't agree with some people causing bad gas, diarrea, bloating and cramping. I have lactose intolerance. Allergy to milk is different in that it cause the same reaction as most allergies, hives, itching, swelling, stuffy nose, etc. I have a little of this too; I get stuffy and my nose and ears run if I eat dairy.

    Hope this helps.

Almond is also good, I drink
Almond is also good, I drink organic soy milk but that is the only pure organic food that I purchase on a regular basis. While I question the use of genitically modified foods, in the normal course of eating they are becoming difficult and expensive to avoid.

    Lactose Intolerant
I once heard a talk show doctor say that most everyone is lactose intolerant but don't show any effects from it.

Anyone ever try goats milk? I was raised on it as I had an allergy to milk during first few years. Later on I went back on it for health reasons. It does taste a bit different and is richer than regular cows milk, but after awhile you end up liking it and then cows milk tastes funny. It's very digestible. And no, I don't really drink milk at all anymore. Just in cereal and coffee.
