Tethys - Vitamin D

Sorry for the shoutout, but I was wondering if you had the chance to speak with your naturopath about Vitamin D? Remember the thread from about a week ago? I stopped taking my Vitamin D daily because I read it had estrogenic effects and was a hormone (I thought we shouldn't take hormones with Ov/Ca). If you have any information, I would love to hear it. Thanks!

Sorry, I couldn't remember who asked
Nope, my naturopath says no estrogenic effects from vitamin D. So best to start taking it again! Have you had your level measured through a blood test? Sorry I dropped the ball.

    Hormones
Not all hormones are "sex hormones."

No problem! I kept looking at the bottle and wondering if I should start taking again. I did have my level checked and it's low, which is why I was anxious about it. I'm also trying to get some sun every day. My onc. didn't know much about Vit. D, so I'm taking 1000 IU of D-3 daily. (I get some in my multi-vitamin also.) Do you take a probiotic? I want to start taking these again, I heard they stimulate the immune system. By the way, I'm researching naturopaths in my area.....Hope you don't mind, I may have some questions in the future.....Thanks for your help.

Taking 1,000 IU isn't going to do much to raise your level. My naturopath has me on 5,000 IU in the summer and 10,000 IU in the winter, just to keep it stable. I do take a probiotic. I've also started eating a lot of raw fermented foods, raw sauerkraut, raw pickles, and coconut milk keifer (unflavored). I followed a diet to get my autoimmune under control, and so far it is working. The enzymes in the fermented foods are key for digesting proteins properly and getting your gut flora up to par. Helped a whole lot more than the probiotics I've been taking...forever! :)

    Autoimmune situation
    Tethys

When you say your autoimmune condition is under control, does that mean you feel better or that you feel better and your thyroid antibodies are down?

It's challenging to get those antibodies back to normal.

I've been on the diet for two and a half weeks and started feeling better the first day. In a few more weeks, I'm going to have some bloodwork done to see if any of this is under control. I'll let you know the reuslts.

    Naturopath
I asked my onc. about naturopathy and they gave me the name of a dr. who specializes in oriental medicine. They said he was the only one they would trust to work with cancer patients. I was a little skeptical. He does acupuncture and things like that. I said what about things like vitamin supplementation, nutrition, meditation and things like vitamin IV drips. They strongly discouraged this. I said 'you're pumping me full of poison every week and you're against vitamin drips' ? LOL.....

You posted a link once to check out naturopaths. Could I trouble you again to post it? I found a woman in my area that I'd like to check out. Thanks for your help. It's a source of strength to me.....

    Sorry Whiterose
But I can't say I'm surprised. Remember, it's your body and most oncologists just don't know anything about this stuff. Good luck.

Tethys, do you have private messaging activated? I'd like to ask you some questions about naturopaths.....Or even a throwaway e-mail address? (An address not linked to your personal e-mail.) Don't want to bore everyone else with lots of questions regarding this.....Thanks.....

    AGREED!

Gynecological cancer patients are notoriously low in Vitamin D upon diagnosis, many studies show.

And if they are low (blood level under the ideal range of 60 -75), a thousand mgs a day will do nothing, especially from a capsule source. Far more absorbable is a liquid form of D3 such as "LiquiD," availalble online.

My integrative doctor prescribed as much as five drops a day (each equivalent to 2,000 IU) until my level of 25 (abysmally low) came up to at least 50; from there, he lowered it to 2 or 3 drops a day.

    Best,
    Rosey
