Pain in lower back

I had an open radical of my left kidney on November 18th. Two days ago I started getting a pain in my lower left back when I take a deep breath on burp. Not with every deep breath , but often. It does seem worse when I first wake up.I ask the Dr. about this. He said if it continues I would need to get some x-rays. Have any of you had similar pains like this?

Nanalou - I experienced some back pain on the side of the incision. Back pain and stomach muscles can be related, and I wouldn't be surprised if due some compromise in stomach muscle strength, this could be affecting your back. You're doing the right thing - keep the surgeon in the loop.

I had "flank" pain for a good year after my left open radical surgery. It's been a bit over two years, and still at times I feel a twinge. Are you eating small meals? Over eating at one time can cause horrible pains.

Nana Lou,

If you read thru the 1000's of posts on this discussion board you will see a variety of aches and pains following surgery. You just had major abdominal surgery. These different aches and pains go with the territory. To the extent you become alarmed that yours maybe something more follow up with your doctor.

Best wishes,

Icemantoo

Thanks everyone for the replies. It helps to know you all had some similar pains. I hope it goes away soon. I think I would be more concerned if the pain was all the time. A hot shower seems to help. Do you think a heating pad would hurt?

I personally don't think heat will help, but you could try. My Doctor explained it to in that he cut through 4 layers. You mentioned
it's the worst when you wake up in the morning. Are you laying on the left side for long periods of time? To this day, I feel very sore when I wake up in the morning. Often times I get up because I'm sore.

It's been six months post surgery for me, and I still feel some "stitches" like a pulling type sensation when I lie on my left side...It's not painful, just a pulling type feeling..When I feel this I roll over LOL, guess everything might not be all back to normal in there....I was also told about adhesions after any surgery....it's nothing to worry about..With all the scars I have (11 to date) from abdominal and nephrectomy, I've come to grips with this feeling... Also, I was told the adhesions could be surgically corrected, butttt, guess what, once the incision from that surgery heals, you get, anotherrr adhesion....It's a vicious cycle, so when I feel them, I change positions...And yes, mornings aren't the best time of day, guess lying for an extended time doesn't help..Once I get moving around, it's all good :-)
