Are these from Swallowing Issues?? Or dilation??

Options
For anyone whose had esophageal dilation - Have you experienced food and liquid running out of your nose???? This just started today. Everything my husband Louis is eating or drinking is now running out of his nose. This is so ironic since we saw his ENT yesterday and she is now suggesting a GTube, which he WAS resisting.

THANKS & God's blessings to all!!!

    No dilation but
Yes I get liquids out my nose and always at the worst times. I also have food just flow back up my throat at times when I lie down.

Ain't life a hoot...grandkids died laughing first time.

when my husband first had his neck dissection, he had that problem. He went to a swallow specialist who said he could get an appliance called an obdurator put in by physicians at the University of Washington. Luckily, this corrected itself so we didn't have to follow up. I hope that will help you, though.

Its the subject of some humor at home
for me also. Heck, if I'm not careful I can flood everything in front of me with liquids. This started a number of months ago for me, partly because of my current cancer, and partly because of my previous surgery. I've practiced different swallowing techniques, and have pretty much got things under control. That is, unless I'm in a hurry and don't get my tonuge and throat properly ready to swallow, in which case I make a heck of a mess.

    Hi louceil

I did not have the esophageal dilation but have the problem with liquid and sometime food coming back out of my nose. It is normally when I go to swallow something the food can’t get down the pipe all at the same time so it backs up either through the nose or the lungs. When it goes to the lungs I aspirate so I prefer it come out the nose so I can wash it clean.

Life is hell after treatment but still so good to be alive.

    God bless

    Hi Denny

Somehow the Grandkids makes all the hell we go through worth it just to be alive and watch them grow up.

    Love life

    NOTHING GETS A CROWDS ATTENTION
MORE THAN BLOWING SCRAMBLED EGGS AND SAUSAGE OUT OF YOUR NOSTRILS. I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN A FEW TIMES, AND I HAVE NOTICED IT MOSTLY HAPPENS WHEN I GET IN TOO BIG OF A HURRY OR JUST SHOVEL TOO MUCH FOOD INTO MY MOUTH AT ONE TIME. I IT GETS STUCK GOING DOWN, I USUALLY TRY TO FLUSH WITH WATER, AND IF IT IS STILL BACKED UP, SOMETIMES THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE IT BACK OUT VIA THE NOSE.

I TOOK A CUSTOMER OUT FOR DINNER ONE EVENING AND THIS HAPPENED AND YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE LOOK ON THEIR FACE.

    PRICELESS!!

WE ORDERED ANOTHER BEER AND KEPT ON EATING LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED.

IT WILL GET BETTER, BUT WE HAVE TO REMEMBER LITTLE BITES, NOT SHOVEL FULLS OF FOOD.

    Me too
For me, it is only liquids (like happens to alot of us when someone tells a joke while we are drinking something), but it happened before my first dilation, and still happens four or five dilations later, although not with the frequency you describe (it is rare for me now). So I suspect it is not the dilation. Just an opinion, but sounds more like a swallowing issue to me.

Best wishes to hub and family.

    Take care,

    :)
That exhibits a LOT of self-confidence, Mike. Great for you! I suspect too many of us shy away from public dining for this and other reasons, especially the potential for gagging. Probably just the last year or so that I have really been going out, and when I have to gag something up I simply try to make it to the bathroom on time...I either do or I don't hahahha.

    Take care,

    Joe

    Similar Problems
Yes the same has happened with me, I have been dilated twice. I agree it mostly happens when I take too large a mouthful and don't chew well enough. The worst is when something gets lodged and you take a drink to hopefully wash it down but it doesn't work. Now it's either hack it all back out or a beeline to the nearest commode so I can start breathing again. It's just part of my new normal!

    TO ALL WHO REPLIED
Thanks for all of your opinions, tips, experiences and what a great sense of humor some of you have (Nostril blowing!). I just love this site and am so glad I joined.

Louis' ENT said he's aspirating and recommends a GTube because the aspiration will not go away and may cause serious lung issues besides pneumonia later. She will attempt Botox for the spasms on his tongue first to see if this helps improve his swallowing. He just wants to try another option but after I read alot of the comments on here about the necessity of a GTube he knows he has no choice after the Botox.

My prayers to all of you and your caregivers,

    Louceil
