Cancer is bullchit !!!!! Anyway you look at it, its bullchit........OK, life has a bad prognosis, its an exercise in futility to think that we will live forever here on earth. Its also bullchit for the USA to allow pharmaceutical corporations to control our destiny and their pockets as well. It is a crime to control who lives and who dies or decide on who gets what medicine because to have a shortage allows them to disperse their meds to the highest bidder. Im on a balance bean to where I will not allow them to wreak havoc on my families welfare, but yet I want the best care I can get. So, now I am retired and my insurance premium for the rest of my life will be $1076 a month. I will leave my family ok as long as I watch what I do. My wish is for the good ole USA to take back who it was before, and be the strong nation it was before, to eliminate the monopolistic regimes that control our health and our pocketbooks. They are bleeding us dry at the expense of our families and we're letting them do it. We sit back and allow our system to go helter-skelter as they please and say, the other man will fix it, I am just 1 person what can I do. I will tell you what we'll do if we don't get off our behinds and start fighting these issues, it will be as I have heard in here before, it will be as if they are "thinning the herd" and it makes me so effin mad to even think that my children may have to face life without a dad at a very early age. Its not dying that bothers me, its the effect that it will have on my family. Why should they suffer...it doesn't make you stronger, it tears the heart out of them. I get sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo mad at what this country is becoming, what will I be able to leave my children but memories. The memories that they will have of me will be those that encircle the life of a father that fought to try and make things better for them. Im getting my game face on because I am getting mad...and whether they like it or not, or whether they treat me or not, my legacy for my kids will be that their father was a man that stood up for what is right and said things that needed to be said to the people that need to hear it...but yet be gentle knowing that their young eyes are watching every move I make, taking in every aspect of who I am, what they will become, and how it will all turn out......

Hi Buzz,
Glad you came here to vent- we all need to do that now and then. I truly know what you mean- I'm not afraid of death because I know where I'm going, but as you said, it's my family that I worry for- for what they'll have to go through and for living life without a mom anymore. I think about that a lot. My youngest is 11 and I hope and pray that if I'm not healed, that I can make it several more years so she gets out of high school and is more independent. Not that it would be easy on the family then, just maybe not as horrible as when the kids are younger. I often think about my actions and what I say is what they'll remember of me & I find I do well some of the time & blow it at other times. Then I remind myself that no one is perfect. Well, Buzz, you take care & keep holding onto that rope. Remember the One who is holding the top end of the rope! I know it gets harder and harder to hang on, but hang on is what we must do.

I read your story yesterday
I read your story yesterday and was shocked. However, you may have some recourse; in the hierarchy of hospitals, your oncologist has a boss. Suspect that whomever that is might be interested in a call from you verifying if what your onco told you is true---rationing the chemo because of a shortage. If his boss isn't concerned, the hospital ombudsman might be, and if not him/er, the PR person.
What kind of facility wants to be known for shrugging their shoulders about your cancer needs? If not out of compassion, which we would hope, then maybe for image.

We've got to STOP allowing lobbyists to write the laws that govern the Pharmaceutical Industry, the Oil & Gas Industry, the Agriculture in our country, and so on. I do not know how many people are aware that THEY (lobbyists and special interests, not elected officials) write or GREATLY influence the laws that the companies have to follow. The laws are written so that there are either loopholes in them so the companies can benefit either in a monetary way or by relaxing or eliminating laws that were in place since the 1970s to protect OUR air and OUR water so they can "drill baby drill" as one example.
It's also similar to having Congress get to vote whether or not they get a raise.
How many out there in cyber-space get to do THAT at work (if they even HAVE a job!)
Not to start WW-IV (I think we've already done WW-III twice!) but why do you think that there are few studies done on "Alternative Treatments"? Who will fund them? Will the Pharmaceutical Industry do it or Monsanto and their "Franken-Food"? Do you think they will just sit back and let funding happen without using their influence to stifle it?
Buzz, keep on fighting. Put your energy into staying well for YOU and for your kids.
My kids were 10 & 4 when I was DX. Now they're about 18 & 12 and I have no intention of going anywhere due to cancer.

I've been around the block quite a few times. The country needs to supply energy.
There just are other ways to move forward other than endangering the planet and/or starting wars to get it. It's not limitless and it's not clean.
We could go with wind power and shout "Blow Baby Blow"

Yea and who is going to pay for the distribution line to carry all this renewable energy?? (You and me thru taxes)?? Which is a major issue may be the liberals in DC can put this in their jobs plan.
T Boone picken as I remember cancelled all his order for wind towers going to West Texas because he could not justify the expense with all the natural gas that is available at a very low rate.
Just a reminder renewable energy investments are driven by tax credits ao bottom line we the taxpayers are on the hook.

So very sorry your crc and your health system has triggered your anger, but I would be too.
Just fight smart and hard.
I did some bowel cancer campaigning, tried to setup a support group. My onc told me to focus on family and my survival. They are my priorities. So walking, diet, meditation and medical care get my time.
Goodluck and I hope you get the chemo that helps you the best.
Went to bed with son on one arm and daughter on other while wife went to work. Just got home
From PNG and got best fathers day presents from family.
Love and care is all around us, kids, God and here.

I feel your frustration. Today was my first day back at work(part-time)only because if i did not go back then I was going to loose my insurance. FMLA was up and could not get extention. I was so sick going in and barely made it through the 4 hours. I have always been a hard worker and always gave 110% at everything. This really sucks!!!

The bottom line for dealing with a corporate kleptocracy, or worse, is to stop using or buying their products, and to develop more self sufficiency. This is tough, particularly with high stakes medicine.
Truth is that companies and govts are and have been determined to get lockin - they get your money first, play with it with like found money, and then, they will dam^ed well decide whether you can have any of it back, when or if. Next, they're not even asking...they're telling you (insurance and govt "benefits", doctor boards).
Any time a doctor says he hasn't taken time to find the 5Fu or leucovorin, that's a sign to move on - s/he's out of (your) business because they are not interested enough take time to find and re-supply themselves, offer a *better* alternative, or carry the critical inventory.
At this time in the country, more self sufficiency is crucial. I can't believe people are missing treatments due to shortages - to me that is a red flag, a clarion call to take responsibilty and remedial action, personally. Whatever it takes.
We disintermediate offenders. We usually control supplies and doctors because we buy bulk supplies, shop cross borders, mostly use oral medicines, multisource doctors and services, research technical issues, keep RNs on tap, and pay cash for almost everything, at a steep discount. Sometimes it is not easy, either something from overseas is runnning low unexpectedly (I prefer 60 days lead time, under 30 days and I'm ballistic) or delays, or an unsatisfactory medical answer needs (lots of) research for a better answer.
But the benefits are huge.0 -

I agree strongly with everyone's frustration and anger. I am fortunate that I am not struggling. What about those who are not so blessed?!? Does having $ mean that you have more rights to medication and treatment - a greater right to live? I feel so frustrated when I read on this board that people have to choose which meds they take or have to do without because they can't afford. This is not just an American issue - it seems to be a worldwide problem. People fall through the cracks in the medical system all too often.
Just yesterday my home nurse was telling me about a patient of hers that has a very rare disease - it is not cancer but the only drug found to work is a chemo drug. However, because he does not have cancer his insurance won't cover the drug . . . . so he is having to go without. Is that fair? Shouldn't our governments step in and pay? Maybe a little less on guns and killing and a little more in positive directions would make this old world a little better for so many.
I could also go on and on about the ribbon issue - why different ribbons for different cancers? Shouldn't all of us be held together with one colour. Fundraising should be for all cancers - not for specific cancers. The world needs to open their eyes to all of this disease - not just a few types.
Okay . . . I could go on and on and get myself into some hot water here. I do hope I haven't offended anyone with my opinions - this post just really got me going.

I completely agree. I honestly worry about what it will be like (if) when I get older. Once I no longer have a job with insurance, what will my care be like?
Sometimes it is not just the cancer that is bad, it is how expensive it is to try and stay alive.
