Frustration

Options
Roby asked me to post this question. He had his apr surgery May 16th. He is still draining from where his rectum use to be. Anyone else had this for a prolonged time? Surgeon says it may not stop till after his chemo treatments are over, he's not concerned about it, no infection. This is just getting old ya know, dealing with chemo is enough.

Thanks
Diane

    leakage
I didn't have leakage, but once in a while there would be some loose bowel movements while i was on an ileostomy. Seems strange if he's having a lot of uncontrolable leakage, but i can understand your frustration. Maybe eating the brat diet will help? bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Diane
    Did Robby have a colostomy?

Is the drainage fecal matter or is it wound drainage?

I had a colostomy and the surgeon used surgical super glue to close off the opening. Fortunately I had no drainage issue from that point.

Others here who had that procedure with stitches have mentioned drainage issues. Perhaps one will chime in with some advice.

    Wishing you both the best.

    Yes, he's got the permanent
Yes, he's got the permanent colostomy. It's just drainage, sometimes has blood in it. Just wondering how long this will last. It comes out of the place where drain tube was at right after surgery. It stopped draining while in the hospital and then about a week after he got home it started draining big time.
Wonder if it should be closed up with the surgical glue??

    Thanks

    Hi Diana
    Thanks for the added info.

I would suggest you talk to his surgeon about the drainage. He is the expert who can tell if it is a normal byproduct of the surgery.

As I mentioned, others have had similar situation and done just fine.

It may just be it will take a while.

I had my surgery on January 10th
and drainage was a major issue for me, all the way into March (I often joked about being feminized).

He had a major organ removed, it this had been in the stomach area, the other organs would have shifted to take up the space, but in the pelvic region the organs are packed so tightly that that the removal just leaves a void.

The body fills that void with fluid, which eventually becomes scar tissue. As the pressure builds it is normal for this fluid to find some kind of exit, usually a portion of the surgical wound.

Like others here, my first leakage was more of an explosion. In my case it was in bed, others have had it happen while walking.

In some cases that failure to heal can be an issue, and the surgeon might recommend a wound vac.

Good luck, and feel free to PM me if you want suggestions dealing with either the leaking or the colostomy.

    Yep!
Honey this drove my husband nutty!! He has had bouts of this since his surgery 3/25/2011. They say it is normal. I believe he has had it three or four times for a few days at a time. He has now not had it happen for a month or so. Stephanie
