Hand Pain

in Head and Neck Cancer #1
I have had chemo and radiation in Oct 2010. Now i am having severe pain in my hands. From 1 to 10 its about a 8. It might be arthritus because i have that in my back and neck except not this bad. Could this be a side effect from radiation? Its so bad i have to take my pain meds out the night before because i can not work the medicine bottle tops in the mourning. Its all i can do to turn a door knob. Any ideas. Thanks David

    It was my husband who had chemo and radiation but I have rheumatoid arthritis.

    Severe pain in the hands can be caused by many different things - do they change colors, as in really red or slightly blue? Then it could Raynaud's phenomenon which could be a result of nerve damage in the neck.

    My first flare of rheumatoid arthritis was in my hands, though, and I hope you'll go to the doctor to see what's going on.

    I would tend to agree, more than likely some form of arthritic pain....

    Not that anything isn't possible, but I've never heard or it doesn't seem reasonable that chemo/rads would be associated.

    Certain types of chemo can cause either temporary or permanent neuropathy. But that seems to come into light more during the actually chemo treatments.
