    Encourage sipping drinks
Encourage sipping drinks and eating small frequent amounts of rice, chicken or anything that he would like to eat for the first 3 days of chemo. I did not eat much and lost weight the week of Chemo but started eating day 4 and day 5 and the week between I really ate well. The Chemo Nurses said my nutrition panel was super during chemo and I maintained by weight.

It is important to drink to avoid dehydration and to help flush the chemo from the body. Warm drinks like tea or room temperature drinks were best.

Take one treatment at a time. Thoughts and prayers are with you both

    Sorry!
Yeah, I was wondering if you kept a cup with a straw (like a sports cup) by the bed, maybe he would sip off and on.

    Praying things get better soon!

    *hugs*

Sorry it is so hard, it
Sorry it is so hard, it really does s*ck :(

Will he drink Ensure? I drank them a lot after my surgery. Make sure to talk to the Onc about how he is feeling, they gave me more anti nausea meds and I got fluids on the pump disconnect day, after I told them how I felt. Sending good thoughts and prayers your way.

    Chemo
There have been plenty of times when I did chemo and then slept for 2-4 days. I just went with it and ate when I could. I did take an "appetite stimulator" which helped. I know it's not easy to be on the outside looking in but I found that my body needed the time to regroup then I felt OK until the next dose. It didn't last forever...
I hope this gives you some insight to the other side of the coin Tina.

Nothing wrong with sleeping, Tina. I think I've mentioned this to you on a few occasions. Rest-Rest-Rest WHENEVER Jorge feels like it. And pass no judgments on him.

The body calls for what it needs - and he needs sleep and rest to recover from the trauma he is being subjected to. Chemo is rough on one's insides.

I had to take my own meds so you could try leaving them by his bedside with some water and see if he can take them on his own schedule. If he won't do that then you'll just have to ride his @ss.

He's hurting which is why he is giving you the looks that kill. He's got to vent it somewhere. As far as food and drink, you could leave a big tumbler of water back in his room so he could sip as needed. When he gets hungry enough he'll eat. Doesn't matter what it is, just something. And small bites and small portions are the key.

Every 2 or 3 hours just see if he can nibble on anything.

It's a rough time, Tina. You've read the stories and it's just not easy. When you get frustrated, just walk away for a spell until you can get your bearings and then try again. I know as men, we can still be animals when we're sick.

We're not the easiest things to love that's for sure. Please stay with it.

    Chemo Yuck!!!
I don't know if this will help, but I will tell you what happened with my husband, keep in mind he has not had any surgery. He started treatments in Dec 2010, 5-fu, Oxy and avastin he had to wear the pump for 46 hrs. His first few treatments were very hard on him, he ended being so very tired, dehydrated, thrush and diarrhea. The onc recommended his favorites (milkshakes for protein and calories) after the oxy effects wore off and gatorade or pedialyte. The effects of the treatment lasted for about a week and then he felt good again, but then low and behold it was time for another treatment. On the good side of things the treatments are working and not so harsh he was able to handle 10 with oxy and after they took away the oxy he is handling them so well that it is awesome he still has a little nausea, but as soon as the pump is off he is off to work he loves to work and it makes me happy to see him able to do what he loves. He is 59 so big age difference, however I guess I just wanted you to know that it can get much better. I will keep you and Jorge in my prayers. Kim

    Which chemo cocktail is
Which chemo cocktail is George on now?
I remember being mind-numbingly exhausted after chemo days...such a long day of waiting
wait to get blood drawn, sometimes 1/2 hour or more
wait to see the doctor then get the chemo approved and ordered
wait for a bed or chair and the drugs - anywhere from min one hour, sometimes more
THEN get hooked up and have a 4-6 hour treatment.

    Then the damn 2-day pump.

It will get better, body is resetting itself for this new onslaight of drugs.
You are vigilant in your care of Jorge....you really really can't take Jorge's anger personally. I can't remember most of the stuff I'd fight about with my husband Lee, but I was so out of it and just not able to sensor my self in my feelings and reactions, I didn't have the strength to be polite and nice and caring towards those I love. I am sure it was really really hard on my family at times.

So carina, take a big deep breath, take some time for yourself, some moments that you can fill yourself up with soemthing that perks you up...sunshine, fresh air, walks, manicures, wine, lo q. quieras!

    ((abrazos fuertes))

    Hi Tina:
Sorry but what is the new chemo?

My George is very fatigued with his new chemo. Just got to let the body rest if that is what your Jorge needs.

Our chemo nurse gave us some samples of what may be a fairly new product, not sure on that one though. It is Boost Plus. It has 360 calories so that might help if he doesn't want to eat. It has lots of vitamins, potassium and protein in it and my George said it tastes better than Ensure. My George was losing weight with his new chemo but now is gaining a little bit back. Last week he was up 4 pounds so that is good.

My George is a little "snippy" now and I just attribute it to the new chemo. It has hit him pretty hard and he is so tired of chemo so you just got to ignore the bad moods, etc. It is not Jorge talking but the chemo and what he is going through. Easy heck no, doable and necessary yes. That is one reason I got a plot at the community garden this year, just a little get away from cancer, and it gives my George some time to watch TV in peace and gets me out of the house a little. My plot is 24' x 24' so there are always weeds to pull, watering to be done, etc.

Don't know if this helps, sure hope so.

    Take care - Tina

Hi, Tina! I am doing chemo now and its really hard. Your husband just doesn't feel good. He probably hates that he is not able to do things he normally does as well and is probably mad at the situation - not you! About meals, there have been times when I asked my husband to fix me something to eat only for him to do so and find me already asleep for the next 12 hours. He has also fixed me a meal that I asked for and then I take one look at it and cannot eat it. The chemo effects your taste buds, your appetite... everything. Right now your husband needs as much sleep as possible. I know when I don't feel good that is all I want to do is sleep it off.

Cancer doesn't give anyone the right to be mean but I really think he is just frustrated and scared. Please be patient and kind... you have no idea how much that helps.

Good luck and please take care of yourself too!

    tired
My treatments make me tired the first day or so. I've had 7 treatments, 5 to go. But a couple of weeks I slept 15 or more hrs. a day. The dr. lowered the dosage of the treatments and spread them out to every 3 weeks, so I have more good days inbetween. My apetite goes up and down, one time it took me 3 days to eat 3 chicken strips. This week I am hungry all the time. Sometimes I can't find anything to drink that makes me feel hydrated. Its been 5 1/2 months since my diagnosis, and time has improved my health. I know it seems hard now, but it does get better. And talk to others that have been there, they can be a really good support system.
