new to site

I have recently been dx with colon cancer. I have been waiting for 4 weeks for surgery because my Dr. wanted to do gentic testing first because of my age and no family history of cancer. The gentic tests results came back that I have HPNCC. My CT scans showed no evidence of Mets. MY CEA was 0.7. I am waiting on the call from my surgeon for a scheduled date. the waiting has been very emotional and I have'nt even had the surgery yet. The colonscopy showed a estimated 2cm. tumor in the ascending colon. Dr has recommended a total removal of colon because of the HPNCC. I am wondering has anyone else out there gone through this before and what I can expect after surgery.

    I don't know anything about
I don't know anything about HPNCC, but I'd get a second opinion at another medical center. To suggest a total colectomy for a contained small tumor seems extreme. I've had family members whose only treatment has been removal of 15 inches of colon around the tumor - no rads, no chemo, and are here to tell of it 15 years later.

    Welcomw to the board. here
Welcomw to the board. here you will find answers and get support from members. I have heard other docs recommending that to pts who had HPNCC. Never had to deal with it myself. Hopefully someone will be able to answer your question. Hang in there. Petrina

    I've looked up HPNCC
Obviously I knew nothing about it with my first reply. I now see that the recommended treatment once colon cancer has been diagnosed is full removal of the colon (according to the Cleveland Clinic).

However, I still think a second opinion is in order. I have a friend who has to have colonoscopies every 6 months, with polyps found every time. However, they are removed before they become cancerous. (Yes, she's had another cancer as well - breast cancer 25 years ago.)

    Just some thoughts.

    Wishing you all the best.
