update blood test result - vitamin d 137 nmol/L and liver enzymes all normal now except ggt which is on way down. bowel getting much better. loosing weight desired.

got the results of my monthy liver function and vitamin d blood test.
very happy with results considering recent surgery and antibiotics,
still a few areas for improvement which i will discuss at the end.

my previous blood tests were 5may11 day before surgery, so in the last 6 weeks i have been in hospital for 11 days and on heavy iv antibiotics for 2 weeks for the post op infection.
had lots of reconnection issues, i have been sleep deprived and on a low residual diet and not exercising a much as i would have.

i have felt loosy and wornout.

my vitamin d increased from 99nmol/L to 137 this test. my target per recurrance prevention is 150 nmol/L per studies. on these tests > 250 nmol/L described as toxic. the safe range is 50-200 nmol/L. currently i take 10000ui drops morning. going to double this to 10000ui morning and night. ie 20000 ui per day and hopefully hit around 170nmol/L.
prior to the drops is was on pills doing 5000ui morning and night. i think the drops are more effective, easier to take. its winter here so getting alot less sunlight.

all my liver enzymes are normal now except ggt which dropped from 212 to 121.
its still double the upper bound but its on the way down.

platlettes went from 113 27apr to 145 5may to 240 15jun. which is great.
wbc increased 2.9 to 3.8 lower limit 4, still good improvement.
my lymphocytes are still 0.5 lower limit 1. they have always been low, i think this will
be the next goal of tcm and naturopath.

my other health goal is still to get to 89 kg. a loss of another 12kg. ie no fat anyway for any cancer to hide.

hit 28 met hours per week exercise re 53% prevention.

continue tcm teas 2 x daily home brew.
juice mornings daily.
more of a vegan diet.
continue naturopath supplements digestive, immunity, neuropathy and cancer prevention supports.

finished chemo 2 months ago now.

lost about 14kg , been exercising regularly, been having very healthy predominantly plant based diet. peripheral neuropathy improved recently have added ala and l glutaminr

also have added SAMe 400mg daily for a month and continued but increased milk thistle to
morning and night with hope to help heal/repair liver damage. also had liver tonic juices daily and liver friendly diet.

its close to a year since i started chemo.

my bowel functions have settled alot, using immodium x 2 daily and slippery elm, probiotics, fibre bulking metamucal and wipes with licocaine and sudocreme as needed.

looking if practical to add tagamet and aspirin to further reduce recurrence risk.
current anticancer supplements resveratrol, tumeric, mcp, juicing greens/beets, tcm.

now bloods are good, the

so i am counting myself grateful that no sign of cancer as per last ct and cea.
that my health is good and i have seen significant improvement in bloods, neuropathy and bowel.

the target going forward is aggressive anticancer tcm herbs and continued supplement hopefully some supplements can be dropped. costly a small fortune.

i am doing my regime about 90%, so some days i miss my tcm tea, or some supplements, exercise, or juicing. i view these as great positive supports but don't let them become a pressure.

any comments or questions ?

hugs,
pete

Thank you, Pete, for the update. Gives us hope. You are an inspiration. I'm sure the weight will easily come off, once your body gets more stable. It is probably confused with all the pounding it took. Take it easy. Here's to healing.

    Hey Pete,

It sounds like all pretty good news, except that you're still struggling with the reconnection issues, but from what I've heard from others, it is to be expected for awhile after reconnection surgery.

Re your vitamin D level, I wonder if the numbers in Austrailia are different than here in the U.S. with the metric system vs. ours. I honestly don't know what is used as the measurement here. On the labslips here, the normal range for vitamin D shows 32-100, with 32 being the minimum recommended. I was told by my naturopathic dr that for a cancer patient, we should have it up close to 70 or 80. Anything over 100 is supposedly toxic. I have a feeling our numbering system for this is different in the different countries- just wanted to clarify because your number according to the labslips in the U.S. is too high, but I imagine it's good on Austrailia's rating/numbering system for it.

Slowly, but surely, you'll get to where you're able to get around without as many issues and will get to exercising soon again. I need to get to exercising more myself. I've just been so tired and weak this past month, I haven't felt up to going to the gym or doing much more than a walk around my neighborhood. At least I am still doing that.

    Take care-

if you times 40ng/mL by 2.5 you get 100nmol/L

if you don't have the energy, then don't push your self to exercise, don't feel guilty.
my take on it is your body is telling you something. you need to save your energy for the fight.

when you have the energy then you will exercise naturally.

i really enjoyed reading this article, its about vitamin d.

    Prevention

Based on studies of colon and rectal cancer, vitamin D levels of 40–60 ng/mL (100–150 nmol/L) may reduce the risk of cancer. Taking 1000–4000 international units (IU) (25–100 mcg)/day of vitamin D may lower colorectal cancer risk.

    Vitamin D and calcium

Studies have shown that taking both vitamin D and calcium provides additional cancer protection for many types of cancer. Calcium intake of more than 1000 mg/day from either diet or supplements is recommended.

Patients in one study took daily doses of 1100 IU (27.5 mcg) vitamin D and 1450 mg calcium. These patients had a 77% reduction in all-cancer rates between the ends of the first and fourth years of the study.

I am glad that you have good news for you health Pete!

As far as exercise goes. Just get up and move when ever you can, and not more then you can. Even a little walk around the house or yard is better then being a bump on the couch. The more I moved the better I felt, etc... There were days I wanted to be a bump on the couch. I would get up and walk the dogs around the block, and it would turn into a several laps around the block. (I was afraid to be away from the bathroom and not make it. Which also did happen, lol.) I would also get out to the store to pick up one item, just to get out and get moving. What ever can motivate you, do it.

    Best Always, mike

Survivorship Plan - Celebrating Improved Hepatic Function
    Pete,
Thank you for the research. I too am interested in what I can do to prevent reoccurrence. So far my research says a 81 mg aspirin for adults, can prevent colon cancer. I am checking with the Mayo Onocologist about the calcium and Vit D amounts for prevention. I currently take 600 mg calcium carbonate, 400 IU of Vit. D plus 1 600 mg fish oil geltab mornings and 350 mg calcium carbonate 130 mg of magnesium for nerves and muscle and 5 mg zinc for regeneration and growth. When I saw the nutritionist she said I should get most of my nutrients from the chemo diet I am following from the American Cancer Society website.

I did read the research on Vitamin D and plan to discuss when I go for my 3 month scan at the Mayo Clinic. I am also on a watch for chemo damage to the liver. After my 6th chemo my levels started to rise above normal but we continued treatment until the last two after a 10 day delay they still were at Alk Phos 244 ALT 200 AST 132 so they treated at 80% chemo ;for the last two treatments. One month after treatment ALK 165 (normal 30-125) ALT 67 (normal 0-33) and AST 64 (Normal 0-36) Two months after treatment celebrating: WBC Platelets and Hemoglobin all in the normal range. Hepatic Panel moving in the right direction with ALK 130 (Normal 30-125) AST 41 Normal 0-33 and ALT 47 Normal 0-36.

Anyone else experience increased toxins in the liver???? For those who complete Folfox how long for the chemo to leave the body??? What is the relationship of increased Hepatic Function levels to nueropathy?

My finger and toe nails are showing 1/4 inch new healthy growth with 1/4 inch red thicker nail growth that I continue to cut off each week. So I am hoping that the finger and feet neurapathy means that as my liver improves and my nails grow more normal it means the chemo is leaving my body and the hope for better days with the neurapathy.

Questions: I will ask about what levels of calcium and Vit D we should have in a good survivorship plan to prevent reoccurrence at my Mayo Appointment in July.

    Dangit Pete
Quit looking for excuses to flirt with them pretty hospital nurses!!!!

Seriously tho... when you say "lots" of blood, are you talking like a teaspoon "on the sides" of the stool, or a teacup full in the bowl? Not meaning to be gross, but if it's the former, then that's very likely just a fissure. If it's more, then you're definitely in the right place!

Please keep up updated, and here's a prayer heading your way :D

    microlax enemas
    thanks for kind thoughts.

Now even though bowel getting better 40 poos a day is not
normal. Now its better then 200.

Butttt now the strategy is immodium to bind stools together.
And microlax enemas to draw them out the other end.

This sounds like fun and something interesting to try.

    Will know soon.

They did xray chest and abdo and blood test. All good.

I ASSume i Just popped some more blood vessels with all the use my arse is getting.
    That what colorectal surgeon said.

For what its worth. If you got a worry goto er and get it checked.

Last night the kids saw all the blood and were happy i went to hospital.
The drive in was pretty unpleasant. Left the kids on own for an hour until
wife got home. Not the best of arrangements. But the best i could manage.
I am going to start taking poo photos to email to surgeon. I hate describing poo.

    Oh, man Pete!
Popping blood vessels- no fun. Maybe that's what I keep doing. I know the rectal tumor is there creating havoc, but until they examine me, I guess I won't actually know what it is. I'm too afraid to just go into ER- they seemed so lame last time like they didn't know anything about colorectal cancer. My insurance HMO won't just allow me to go to the ER at the hospital that I want to go to (where I had my liver surgery & where this colorectal surgeon I'm waiting for a call back from is).
I sure hope I can actually talk to someone about it on Monday & that it doesn't give me too much pain over the weekend.

Well, sorry you went through all the pain you went through, but glad you got it figured out and a plan is in the works to remedy it. Rice fiber is good for slowing things down in the diarrhea area. I have been using this and it works pretty well. Problem is, sometimes things in that area hurt less when the stool is loose and watery. I choose my poison, I guess.

    Take care-
