Anyone Have Experience with Xeloda?

Hello,

Please don't let my UserName mislead you. It has nothing to do with anyone's cancer diagnosis; it's just my automatic response when anyone asks how "my husband and" I are doing.

I received my 2nd diagnosis of Stage 2 colon cancer in March of this year (the first was in June, 2009). After having my 2nd resection, my oncologist said she could prescribe Xeloda for 6 months, or follow up with surveillance.

I posted my question on the Colorectal discussion board, but I'm having a hard time finding anyone who can tell me about their personal experience with Xeloda. Since I know it is also prescribed for those with breast cancer diagnosis, I just wanted to check here to see if anyone might be able to share their experience (dosage strength, length of treatment, side effects while taking Xeloda, long-term effects, cancer recurrence despite Xeloda treatment, etc.)

    My sister
    was dx with stage 2 BC in 2006. After chemo, radiation and numerous hormone surpressors the BC spread to her bones in 2009. Meds were changed but each bone scan showed progression. Finally earlier this year she started Xeloda and for the first time PET SCAN showed tumors to be shrinking. Of course there are side effects-She is experiencing the peeling of her hands and feet (using Uddercream as recommended since day 1 of Xeloda) and aches and pains. She was prescribed Lyrica which has eliminated pains. We believe Xeloda is the miracle she has been waiting for. I myself was dx'd with Stage 1, grade 1 BC Oct. 2010.

    I took it with Tykerb
    It made me very sick to my stomach but I could handle that with some other meds. Mainly I had mouth sores bad. My tumors shrank some but then they took me off of it to try another chemo. I didn't get the response I hoped for but it's still some good stuff and I have huge bottle waiting if they ever say start it again!!

    I took Xeloda 33 weeks,
    I took Xeloda 33 weeks, Monday through Fridays. I had Saturdays and Sundays off. I didn't have the mouth sores with it that I had with Chemo. What I really noticed was the way my hands and fingers felt like parchment paper. I also had a couple of toe-nails that I think were about to come off when my Xeloda came to an end. Other than that, I didn't have any side-effects. However, my onc told me we could adjust the dose if I had any really bad reactions.

    Hi Suzy,

    While I have had breast cancer, my husband had Stage III colon cancer. He had chemotherapy by infusion and also took Xeloda orally. He had 8 rounds of chemo. His primary issues were neuropathy in his fingers and toes and inability to tolerate cold foods/drinks. He used to say that it felt like he was swallowing shards of glass. That was 3 years ago. He is just fine now and has no residual side effects - either with neuropathy or tastebuds. I hope for the same for you.

    I love the picture of the dog!! I can't even imagine what both of you have gone through. My husband had colon cancer and prostate cancer, but we've alternated. He has cancer--I have cancer...lol
