Tip: ScarGuard MD for discolored and raised scars

Just wanted to share a tip for those who want to treat their scars with some extra TLC :-)

I have been using ScarGuard MD (you can buy it at CVS) on my lumpectomy scar for the last 4 weeks, and my RO says that my scar looks really good (some good news that I liked hearing). ScarGuardMD is used by lots of cosmetic surgeons.

The way it works is, that it puts a tiny silicone layer over the scar and that helps to limit fibrous scar tissue from forming, so the scar doesn't get raised on top of the skin (and if it is already raised it will lessen that dramatically). It also makes the scar look far less red, and eventually will help it to become color-less. You can start using it after your wound is closed (usually about 2 weeks after lumpectomy) and then use if for several weeks/months. After 4-6 weeks you will see effects.

ScarGuardMD comes in a small bottle and looks like clear nail-polish (even smells a bit like it), and you just put it on your scar twice a day, wait 1 minute to let it dry and you can then shower with it, put clothes/bra over it without it staining or coming off -- If you want, you can pull the small silicone layer off real easy with tape, but usually it comes off automatically after about 8-12 hours.

My RO said to not use it during Radiation Treatment, but afterwards I can start using it again to help settle the redness of the scar.

The company even makes a specific type of ScarGuard MD for red/brown/discolored scars: it's called ScarLight MD. And it also makes SolarGuardMD to protect scars from the sun and prevent further discoloration in the future (no experience with those 2 products yet).

For those who are interested you can check out their website at: www.scarguard.com

Hope this tip was useful -- anything for my fellow sister warriors :-)

    Help with scars
    Hi GrowingSoul,

Thanks for the tip about Scarguard. I have a small, pink, raised scar where my port was removed on my upper left chest. It itches occasionally, too. Most of the time nobody but me can see it but it is bothersome nonetheless. I think I will do a price check tomorrow when I go to CVS. Thanks again. IRENE
