Tooth extraction yesterday-no hyperbaric-watching for healing process

Hi everyone. We have been having this discussion for some time now and thought I should update everyone on my progress. I had the molar, number 19 extracted yesterday after an experimental trial of a wire and rubberband extraction failed. This was an alternative method proposed by my dentist using leverage to remove the tooth over several months. I still think it has merit but perhaps not for the location of this molar. I am not against hyperbaric chamber treatment and would undergo hyperbaric if necessary. It was my feeling that the molar had been on the opposite side of the radiation field and thus received only 50 greys as opposed to the 70 grey radiation side. For informational purposes #19 is on the bottom jaw bone which is the worst for radiation absorbtion as opposed to the top because of bone density. My dentist conferred with the radiation oncologist and they thought it was feasible to perform an extraction without hyperbaric treatment although they did encourage it.

The extraction went very well as my dentist took his time in removal and coaxing to reduce tissue damage. I did need several stitches. There was a good amount of blood and pain which is fantastic news as blood supply is the issue at hand. For informational puposes this tooth has been abcessed on and off for around 6 months now. Again an indication of blood supply prior to the extraction.

So the jury is still out as now it remains to be seen if healing occurs. I will update on the healing process but am optimistic because of the wonderful bleeding. I even got my own gauze to put on the wound to absorb the blood. Just estactic over having it out and the copius amounts of blood.

I had two teeth extracted almost two years ago now. No HBo but they did give me a high dose of Anti Biotic for 30 days and watched me very closely. Every 10 days they checked me out for 2 months then every two months and now I am up to 6 months. The pot hole has totally not filled in and may never but he says this is some what normal.

I had to keep it clean with a siringe many times a day, now I use my water pic.

Hope it goes well for you.

    Teeth extraction
I am having major teeth problems. Finished Rads and chemo in june of 2009, had to have a couple of teeth pulled a couple of months later. Went through 20 hbo treatments before extraction and 10 following all went really well. Over the past six or 7 months my teeth have been breaking and I have been in a lot of pain. I now need the remaining teeth and all of the below gum line parts taken out. This will be done in OR at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. They said that the HBO was good for life.

    Hi Ratface
I would have never believed I would tell someone that I was glad to hear they were bleeding but I guess there is a first for everything. Glad you did not have to do the HBO, I am look at it sometime next years when I get a lot of my teeth removed, which is after I get the Jaw opened to 32mm

Take care and keep doing well my friend

    Bloody Good News
Agree, good news on the bleeding...just keep an eye out for any infection as you know....

Hoping all goes smooth for the healing. I know you are relieved, I hate going to the dentist, and having any tooth pulled especially.

    Best,
    John

    back from the dentist today
and the healing is progressing like a normal person. For baseline comparison I was stage 4, base of the tongue, to the right of the midline, 39 radiation treatments, cisplatin x3, and a right selective neck disection. The tooth was #19, on the weak radiation side of treatment. Right side received 70 greys and left side only 50 greys.

First two days extraction area was dark red/brown with blood clotting. Day 3 into 4 developed this weird white stringy tissue stuff almost like a jelly fish type tissue. Gone the next morning. Day 5, I found the stitches with my tongue. Blood clot must be almost gone. Day six, spit out some red/stitching with my breakfast. Extraction area not painful and light brown. Area is starting to turn gum pink and appears to be healing normal.

Pain level, 1st day 1 1/2 hydrocodones tablets.
day two and three a couple of Tylenols, hurting a little around bedtime

Today is day 6 with great healing, no pain. I keep the area clean with a diluted providone iodine solution. No brushing or water pik yet. No eating or chewing on that side. Drinking fluids is not a problem over the area. Looks promising and I'm optimistic?? First time in ages that I don't have a dentist appointment next week. I'm in heaven!

    So far, so good.
At least #19 is on the side that got less rads, that could be better, I suppose.
For me 19 is on the side I had the neck dissection and I wonder if that side got more than the other. I don't know because I was unknown primary, so I have no clue how they plotted that out for me.

So far, I still have no pain with 19 or his restoration with it. I have another appointment in June, and I am hoping this will be the last of the fillings! I'm soooo sick of the fillings......

    More than likely
Sweet you are just the opposite as typically the disection side unless a full disection gets more radiation. Those numbers are available from your Rad doc if you ever need them.

    20 days past extraction
and all is well. The site is completely healed over with nice pink tissue. The abcess/infection seems to have finally found a way out. I've stopped antibiotics. Chewing is possible over the site with around 80 percent bite pressure. If the circumstances fit it is possible to avoid hyperbaric treatment for some extractions.

    Hi Rat

That is some great news my friend and even better to hear you did it with out HBO. I will go to see my Dentist at MD Anderson on the 9th of next month for problems with a tooth that keeps hurting; if I can I will have it pulled.

    Take care

    Nice
Nice to hear your doing so well without HBO and healing so fast.

The plus for me is to hear another do it without HBO like I did.

    Prayers continue for more healing.

    Hi Dan,

This post is almost 4 years old and while many of the H&N members still participate you may not get a huge response.  For something you can really sink your teeth into try starting a new thread.

Teeth are a BIG topic here.

    Good luck,
