bleeding cancer or surgery????

in Colorectal Cancer #1
A question that keeps me crazy!!! Chris is a year NED his last scan in March. A little history. July 09 chris went to the ER looking 9 months prego. They rushed him into surgery to remove his tumor which had blocked off his colon. He was given a colostomy. 6 days later we were released and 12 hours after that back in the ER with 2 purfurations to the bowel. Another surgery and a illeostomy. 6 months of chemo then a 7 hour surgery to reverse both. That was March 2010. I know he has been opened up alot and there are always things that come with that. But for the last 2 weeks he is so fatigued. Sleeps all night wakes up goes to work half a day then has to come home and take a nap. But still can go to bed at 9 for the night. Says he just cant feel rested. Also he says he is noticing quite a bit of blood in his stool. I called and the DR said that it can be surgery related. Is it really possible for bleeding to start now? A year after his last surgery? I hate to always think cancer is back especially because its only been 2 months since his clear scan.... Does anyone have this problem after their surgeries???

    He may need to be checked for his red blood count and see if it is dropping slowly. Is it fresh bright red or dark dull. He needs to get to the Dr and get checked out asap....sounds as though his fatigue and blood in stool may go hand in hand.

    Skin requires collagen formation, which requires things like vitamin C, glucosamine, trace minerals and vitamin K. Wounds, fever, infection all rapidly deplete vitamin C to zero, as well as other normal body stores. People deficient in vitamin C and K, of course, bleed.

    We made a fortified oral formula made from whey powder, vitamin C, grams/day, and everything else in high dose as part of our hospital nutrition. Wife walked out of the hospital two days early after major surgery with anastomosis, and went to the mall.

    I am sure the hospital staff thought that was pure dumb luck. Three reasons we use high dose vitamin C, completely aside from the question of any cidal action, is to avoid complications from surgical wounds, 5FU chemotherapy, and histamine build up that provokes malaise and VEGF fertilization of angiogenesis to aspiring tumors.

    My only symptom was fatigue and it was due to anemia from blood loss.

    Bleeding at this time is not normal - it should not be tossed off as a "surgically related" issue as an assumption. If there is indeed bleeding the source must be investigated and treated.

    I'm still having blood going the bathroom after two years out. My surgeon has done a colonoscopy last June and said everything is fine (knowing of the bleeding) and now I'm to have a flex sig in May to check on the pouch (J-pouch reversal). It could be something like a fissure or hemrhoids. Mine is caused by severe radiation damage which was seen on the scope and tons of vessels were brought to the surface and now rupture due to pressure or passage of fecal matter. Better be safe and have doctor check it out though. My surgeon isn't concerned of mine, but your situation might be different. Get it checked. Hope this information helps and you get some information from doctor that answers your situation.

    Hi Mel, I would think he needs to go in to see his Dr.?...I did have surgery and the iliostomy and reversal but I'm still on chemo so no real experience like his as I know chemo is my fatigue. Yes I say a check up is in order. I hope all goes well for him.
