Any BC patients <30 out there?

in Breast Cancer #1
Hi there,

I trying to figure out the cause of BC at such a young age. Im 28 and in perfect health. Apart from having BC that is. Are there other young women out there asking the same questions as I am?

    Rmemeber that this a Holiday weekend - Passover and Easter for both Eastern and Western Christian. So many are with Family/Friends and observing their Faiths rather than being 'on-line'.

    Carrie is younger than 30 and heather was 34 when diagnosed, I believe Cypress Cynthia was 33 and I was 34 when diagnosed the first time. I was diagnosed around pregancy. But I really hve never figured it out.

    My niece
    My niece was diagnosed at 30.My mom was diagnosed at 21(1941). My doctor is treating a young mother who was breast feeding and found her tumor.She is 22.I also know of a teen(17) who had a double mascetomy because her breasts were pre-cancerous.I know of another young lady(25)who has pre cancerous breasts and they are giving her a anti estrogen pill. Not sure which one. Also don't know how long she will have to take the pill. I started out at age 20 with 2 benign tumors.(what a shock that was) I just gave birth 6 weeks before.

    Way to many young people today being diagnosed.

    Thank you! My husband is a scientist, and Im highly analytical myself. I backtracking my whole life to "solve the riddle". I was given birth control pills at 17 (!), because my family doctor was concerned that my periods were irregular. Now I gravely question that call, as I have learned that messing with the hormones while you are developing into a woman can have just these consequences. 34 is very young too! I just read stats about "women under 40", but feel as most of the "under 40" are "just under 40". While I am not happy to find much younger women diagnosed, I am interested in hearing your stories should you be willing to share.

    Im so sorry to hear you were diagnosed around pregnancy. I can only imagine the emotional, phycological and physical toll you endured. I found out that I was pregnant just after I found out that I had BC. But the baby miscarried around the time of my diagnosis, so I never faced the question of how to manage treatment during pregnancy. Instead I went from miscarriage surgery to breast surgery to fertility preserving surgery this coming Tuesday. I am hoping to hear there was a happy story to your pregnancy?

    The numbers you give me are shocking. Im very sorry to hear about your mother, yourself and the other people you refer to. I really believe in external factors triggering BC in young women. If our hormones are put out of balance when our breasts are developing, our body can't tell the healthy growth from the cancerous growth. Now a days many women in all ages mess with their hormones through birth control pills and pills to control side effects of menopause.

    I forgot to mention my mom lived 60 years as a survivor.Amazing when she was dx in 1941.I was born later.

    I wish for you and all other young survivors a 60 year survival. With things happening all the time in research it will happen.It will happen for all of us.We all will be living much longer lives.

    DianeBC. You are right.There is no age barrier for breast cancer or any cancer.

    I was diagnosed at 32 last Jan. Undergoing chemo now (my third tomorrow).

    Yes, all sisters are right. Age doesn't matter.

    One thing that gets to me is when doctors, boyfriends, friends, say to you: "You are too young! Stop worrying. Don't get a biopsy." Especially coming from Drs.- it makes me mad. I am so glad I checked, and proceeded with everything. I think an important message right now is AWARENESS for EVERYONE - all AGES. And of course, a cure ASAP (it might be in a bug or a tree!).

    We are here for you if you ever need to talk.

    I also wonder...dx when 35
    I am not under 30 but I was 35 when dx. I also took birth control pills for 8 years starting at age 20 (I had my first "accidental" child at 28 while on the pill).At 31-32 I had "something" that I am positive had to do with hormones going on, I went to see many doctors and had many tests but all dr's told me I was perfectly healthy. 2-3 years later they tell me I have BC (3 tumors, one was estrogen positive). That was after having my second child (I even breastfeed both my kids which is said to help against BC).

    P.S. I have no family history in young women and I am negative for the BRAC gene.

    I was 36 athletic and well built
    People always ask me if I think I did anything to contribute to my breast cancer diagnosis and the answer is YES... Everything we do might have an impact if we are at higher risk.

    I smoked since very young age though an athlete
    I was a drinker from a young age and both of these increase estrogen in women
    I worked shift work 12 hours a day for half of my Manufacturing Career
    I worked with chemicals that I washed in that now have been banned because of toxins
    I too took birth control at 17 years of age
    Lived a very stressful LIFE

    These were my contribution to my life and might have increased my risk factors and accept that for I cannot change it. I feel very fortunate to have been a survivor all these 14 years but it certainly hasn't stopped bad things from happening.

    I am sorry you too have to face such things as we all know hard it is to face and carry on.

    Thanks for all your great replies. I was brushed off with "young women have lumpy breasts" when I was concerned almost a year ago. I keep thinking how things could have been different had I examined the lump at that time. As it is, I am lucky to be diagnosed at stage I (thanks to my amazing husband). Lynn, its great to hear such an uplifting survival story! Lets hope we will all have the same.

    Hi Eva,

    I got brushed off with the young lumpy boob thing too when i was 25...then was dx with a 4cm invasive tumor, 6cm DCIS,Pagets and 2 positive lymph nodes at age 30

    We know our bodies better than anyone in the whole world..and if docs wont take your concerns seriously - kick them to the curb!!! They are working for you remember!

    I also asked the how/why question and turns out that I inherited the BRCA2 gene...although less than 5% of all breast cancer is hereditery..it is much more likely to be the cause if you are a young age at dx...has your doc talked to you about this?

    I am 19 years old and was diagnosed this past September. It has been especially rough going through something so life chamging at such a young age. I had to take a year off school and move back in with my parents and even little things affect me. Not feeling comfortable in a bathing suit, wearing wigs everyday, having multiple visible scars on my body.. All are daily reminders that I'm sick. The truth is, breast cancer is tough at any age. The way I look at it is that there have been so many positive things that have come out of this. I have such a great outlook on life and am so much more grateful for all that I have been given. I want to live everyday to the fullest and I've realized the importance of building and maintaining strong relationships/friendships. I feel so blessed that I have the rest of my life ahead of me to do whatever I put my mind to and help other people.
