Are mouth sores common with T/C?

I am just wondering how common this side effect with Taxotere and Cytoxan is? I will be starting in a couple of weeks and I think I am dreading the thought of mouth sores more than anything else (besides nausea but that can be controlled or so I am told). Is there anything you can do to prevent them, or relieve them if they do occur?

Thanks!

Nancy

Hi Nancy, I had Cytoxan as a cocktail with 5FU and Epirubicin. The taxotere was given last and on it's own. I didn't get any mouth sores until I had the taxotere and then I got them really bad. Don't know if everyone does though. There are mouth rinses that give almost immediate relief. Ask about using ice chips to help prevent them. They may not completely prevent them but they can make a real difference. This was suggested to my husband when he had 5FU for colorectal cancer and I used them also for 5FU. Don't know why they didn't suggest it for the taxotere though. Best of luck to you...hope it's a smooth ride :)

    Hi Nancy,
I didn't get mouth sores with T/C, but did have dry mouth (and still do). I used Biotene mouthwash, gel, spray and toothpaste. At my last dentist appointment my dentist prescribed Magic Mouthwash, which has helped.

I was the same as Jean....
The only mouth sores I got were with the Cysplatin I was given for my rectal cancer. Then, I also got a sore on my nose (under my glasses).

Like Jean, Magic Mouthwash was the recommended treatment. I made sure to stay SUPER hydrated the day before, day of, and day after infusion....

    Yes, with Cytoxen Anyway
I had Cytoxen and Adryiamicin(sp?). Mouth sores where a very common side effect. My oncologist prescribed and special mouth rinse to use twice a day whether I felt them come on or not. It helped a lot. I only got on small one throughout my chemo regimen.

Don't hesitate to ask your doctor about any concerns you have. They should be more than happy to explain things to you and I believe the mouth rinse is routinely prescribed for people when their going through chemo.

    Highly recommend Biotene mouthwash
    Nancy,

While not everyone gets them, mouth sores are common with TC.

I did 4 rounds of TC, and am prone to canker sores anyway, so my oncologist had me start using Biotene mouthwash before I even started chemo. You can get it from any drugstore, it's not expensive, and has a very pleasant, mild taste. I used it religiously all through chemo, and only had a couple of very minor mouth sores -- I highly recommend it.

If you do get mouth sores, there are definitely mouthwashes your oncologist can prescribe, and, as several of the ladies here have said, they work really well.

    Hope that helps?

I used Biotene toothpaste, mouthwash and throat spray; plastic silverware and drank lots of water. I never had mouth sores. I have read they can be quite painful.

    No sores...
Had the same chemo cocktail and not one sore...A friend who is a maxillary facial surgeon prescribed NYSTATIN..not over the counter...Also rinse your mouth several times a day with warm salt water and baking soda.....I, personally, only used the Nystain once in a while...kept it in the frig...it seemed to help somewhat with taste when my taste buds left me each week after each infusion...hopefully you'll do fine....

Nystatin is for thrush or a yeast infection on the tongue and/or throat. I would get thrush after every AC treatment. I would use the nystatin for about 5 days and then would be ok. I have to say with treatment my tongue always felt sore. I didnt get any mouth sores, but my mouth was dry, and I used biotene. Dry mouth can lead to cavities so try to use the rinses.

Thank you all for your excellent advice! I have a pre-chemo oncologist visit tomorrow so I will ask about the Biotene products for sure. You all are a wealth of great info!

    A/C, Taxol
I had Adriamycin and Cytoxan every 2 weeks, then Taxol every 2 weeks, for a total of 8 times. THe mouth sores were probably one of the most problematic of my side effects. It was very difficult to eat (I lost about 40 pounds). But as you can see from most of the others' responses, not everyone gets the same side effects. Here's hoping that you are spared the mouth problems. Hugs, Linda

    Yes, I had mouth problems
I had TC and herceptin and experienced problems with my mouth... My tongue would turn completely white and the inside of my mouth was very tender.

Thrush is name of the problem.

In any case, what worked for me was plain greek yogurt... I would hold it on my tongue for a few seconds then swallow. I like yogurt so it was no problem. The probiotics in the yogurt are supposed to help with your digestive system too.
I was on medication for it also... some kind of anti fungal med.

It would come right after a chemo treatment... it was bad for a few days... and then it would disappear over night after 4-5 days.
