Reoccuring Ascites

in Ovarian Cancer #1
Can anyone tell me about reoccuring ascites? After two years of treatment for ovarian cancer my friend has developed ascites and has the paracetesis procedure done approximately every other week. Will it eventually go away? Any light you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Where are the ascites? Abdomen or lungs? My mom has a drain in her lung that she and my dad drain once per week. This has provided quite a relief.

    mine did not go away until chemo
    mine didn't go away until after a couple chemos

    Ascites returns quite
    Ascites returns quite rapidly, and will continue to do so, until the cancer growth is arrested, to some extent. Usually, chemo will stop the ascites.

    I had 3 liters of fluid drained from my abdomen before my surgery, and 6 days later it had all returned, plus an additional 6 liters.

    What kind of treatment has your friend received? Is she currently in treatment?

    Her ascites is in her abdomen. How long has you mom been having the ascites around her lungs?

    I know that she had ascites
    I know that she had ascites at the beginning of this battle as well. It was drained and also relived with chemo. She is currently recieving chemo treatments and really has been for the past two years. Now the ascites keeps returning and she appears to be not feeling well. Although she never complains. It doesn't sound like the chemo treatments will stop. I wish I knew how to help her.

    Hi Carlene,
    For some reason i always look to you for the right answer so i hope you don't mind if i do it again.
    Mom had an unsuccessful surgery back in September. She had two litres drained and the ascites has not come back. What do you make of that?

    That's a good sign, Kelly.
    That's a good sign, Kelly. Cancer can trigger ascites. Although it's just a symptom, and can be due to other things, No asicites is always a good sign when you have been diagnosed with cancer.
