Hello all,

This time I am looking for some advice. Besides Mark having stage IV NSCLC with adenocarcinoma & mets. He has type II diabeties which he really hasn't been monitoring the past 6 years. Now he is monitoring with the blood test meter (doesn't look good) and I need help. Due to the fact he has to have everything he eats pureed for the next few months while he gets rid of the thrush in his mouth. I have to be careful about his carb and sugar intake. His blood sugar levels are very high and he doesn't want to end up back in the hospital with DKA again. I need suggestions on a high fat, weight gaining, low/no carb, low/no sugar diet that I can make into "baby food" meals since he can't chew anything per the doctor.

Any and all suggestions will be welcomed! I am going to head to our local GNC to see if I can find anything to help him but I need real food meals too. The past couple of days his blood sugar levels have been over 229+. He is injecting humilin 70/30 30 units both am & pm. Unfortunately we don't have a primary doctor (no insurance) only the two oncologists so I can't ask him. And being the weekend (again) I have no place to turn except online googling and asking in CSN.

Like I said any suggestions will be welcomed. I read about kidney beans are high in fat and protein so I am going to make him some chili. Please email any recipes (not chili) that may be able to help him.

Thanks for listening! ~Kelly

    Hi Kelly,
Sorry to hear you are stuggling there. I found a nutritional drink at Costco's.
It is made by Premier, it is a Protein drink 30 g of protein, 1 gram of sugar, 160 calories. Unfortunately, it is low fat. But does cover the protien needed. I buy it in chocolate flavor. I am very fussy about taste of drinks and it is awesome! It is the best price I have found too, 24 pak for $6 and some change. Hopefully you can find something at GNC to add the fat to his food you are blending to get that fat intake. I wish you the best and take care.

    Add some whipping cream
Take the nutritional drink that is high in protein, and add in an ounce of whipping cream (or more if desired)... still tastes good, maybe better and adds about 100 calories of fat while adding less than 1 gram of carbohydrate.

    Update
    Hi Kelly,
I was just thinking of you and Mark. I am checking in to see how you both are doing? Has there been any improvement to his appetite and getting enough nutrition down. I saw you had additional posts from others that sounded very good, such as adding the whipping cream. What a fantastic idea that is! Something for all to remember. I will keep you in thoughts and prayers and I wish you both the best!
