in Colorectal Cancer #1
Hey guys jorge is going to start radiation on Monday what can I do to make it go by as easy as it can . He will also be getting chemo on Tuesday I'm just wondering if he will have pain or anything . Thanks guys for everything hugs to you all .Tina

    Radiation effects........
    Normally diarrheaa, or constipation, or both...slight unburn where the rays will go through the skin...if you can get it from the radiation dept. "AQUAPHOR" is great for the minot or major burn...He will be tired, can't help it, it is what it is,,let him rest as he wants. Radiation for me normally wasn't to bad at all.........chemo may be a different story...Radiation isn't bad though....Love to you both.buzz

    Thanks buzz Jorge has had 15 rounds of chemo . And he handle it pretty good hugs to you Tina

    Hi Tina,

    I had six weeks of radiation back in early '08 on my very low rectal tumor. I was fortunate that I did not get any burn to my skin until the 5th week of radiation. I was told that was unusual- most get it sooner. I also didn't start getting hit with the diarrhea until about the end of the 3rd week. When it hit, the diarrhea was bad- there were a couple of days I didn't make the 1/2 hr drive all the way home without an accident- definitely no fun. So, Jorge may need to use a pad or adult diaper starting about halfway through just in case. For the skin burn, aquafor helps & they gave me another ointment that I forgot the name of & that helped too. The fatigue hits after the first couple of weeks- it may be multiplied since he's also getting chemo. The fatigue in me lasted for 2-3 weeks after I finished radiation. Supposedly, the radiation keeps on working a couple of weeks after finishing. I had my follow up colonoscopy/scan about 3 or 4 weeks after finishing the radiation, if I remember correctly.
    Here's sending good thoughts and prayers for all to go well for Jorge.

    I would stay in really close contact with the radiaition nurse.
    It depends on what they are radiating?

    I did, some nurses know much less than others. I had this unfortunate situation as well.

    Everyday I was asking , begging for help.

    I had heaps of issues. Pain like child birth. I had radiation for rectal cancer.

    so numbing jellies, suppositories, panadiene forte.

    etc etc etc

    Lisas right..........Radiation will continue
    to work for about 4-5 weeks after treatments are over...Most surgery is based on the optimum time between the time periods of 4-5 weeks after the radiation treatments are over..This is the optimum time when radiation has done about all it can and scar tissue is just about to start developing...Its the best time frame for most surgical procedures as ours are....love to you both...........buzz

    Graci Jorge is not having any pain at all but he did have pain before he had his first chemo but after he started chemo the pain was gone .hugs Tina

    My situation copies most on here. For me the radiation wasnt as bad as the chemo. mine was directed at the area where your large and small intestines meet sort of the lower right quadrant of my midsection. It caused slight discoloration (never felt like a burn to me?) at the site, loose bowel, and fatigue. it was four weeks after radiation that I had my surgery. I had the radiation treatments twice and the second time was really no different then the first, except the discoloration was darker and it took longer to go back to normal.

    I did not have radiation - thankfully the surgeon was able to get it all and clear margins. I think of your family often and keep you in my prayes. Hope all goes well for your husband.
