PET/CT VS NO PET/CT

Hi ALL!

Just had one simple question. Why is it that some cancer patients get PET scans and some don't? How many people didn't get one from here?

I also notice they don't recommend it unless needed. I wanted to know your thoughts on this.

    My oncologist said no pet/ct
    My oncologist said no pet/ct unless I have a problem. I have been told that alot of times pet scans show things that really are not there and causes alot of unneeded worry.

    Mine said almost the same
    Mine said almost the same thing as beetle25. I've never had one.

    Scans
    My scans, CAT scan, bone scan and breast MRI were done 3 weeks AFTER my lumpectomy....to see if cancer was elsewhere in my body...all clean..now 17 months after all treatment, now it's only blood work and oncologist visit every 6 months and mammograms.

    My onc sent me for PET scan the first week of chemo. I am having a CT scan on Wednesday and see my onc next week. I finished rads Feb 15 and chemo Dec 7.

    I've had 3 CT, 2 bone scans, an MRI and a PET. Before I started Chemo I had a bone scan, a CT, an MRI and the PET (also ECHO). PET showed something "hot" along jaw but biopsy was normal. Before I started Rads that Dr wanted a new CT. After done with Rads I was having a lot of back pain so my PA wanted to be sure that it was just the arthritis that's been there for years but never bothered me so had another bone scan - showed just that the arthritis was a bit worse. Had the last CT last Nov as I got a bad pressure and pain around and behind my right eye (pain meds did nothing to help - but Dex. did) but nothing showed up again and the pain left as abruptly as it had started 2 weeks after startig Dex.

    Remember that what's right for one is not right for all. Different types of cancer are very different and treated differently. For some of us, lumpectomy is never an option, rather or not we do chemo and rads is also not an option if we hope win the battle. For some Chemo comes both before and after surgery, for some it doesn't. Different Drs have different ideas - Because of being IBC - all my Drs wanted a lot of scans so they had an idea as to rather or not it was Stage III or IV before starting Chemo, Surgery, Chemo, Rads. My surgeon and Chemo Dr did not feel that they needed more scans after TX but Rad Dr wanted one before he started so it was done. The 2 scans my PA ordered were to be sure what was going on.

    There is no one right or wrong - we are all so different.
