    Nearly a year for me
It will be 1 yr. on March 22nd since my lumpectomy. I understand your being nervous. Mine was really not to bad. I had the needle localization and the sentinnel node mapping before surgery and had 3 nodes removed. I think I was leaving hospital in 2 hours time. Surgery was about 1 1/2 hours, I think. I was the last one of the day to be in recovery so I think they rushed me out! lol I spent that first night with my son and his wife and then was home after that. I had some pain but after the first 36 hours just used advil for the pain. They said to take the pain med for the first 24 hrs. even if the pain was not to bad, so it would not get bad. I recovered well from mine. Prayers and Gods blessings

    Forgot this
I did stay sore for a while but not terribly so. I think I prob did more that I should have too. My daughter had her baby 5 days after and my DIL had her baby 12 days after that :o) I was tired for a while. I was driving in a few days and just had to be cautious with any lifting on that side. I still have some pain occasionally around incision site. My Onc. said it is normal and is the nerves healing. God Bless

I did follow with chemo and rads too.

3 yrs for me since my surgery
To be honest the surgery was much better then I expected-Happy to say. I am not sure if you are having the wire locator done. NOT to scare you...but that was worse then the surgery. IT"S not bad-but no one told me what it was -or how it was done etc.

I was hardly in pain afterwards..went back to wokr 2 wks later (I am sure I could have gone back a bit earlier)

IT took me 3 wks to look in the mirror (just me-I dont' handle medical things well!!)

NOW (3 yrs later) I look more and mis-shaped yes but not a bad as I thought!

I know this is not giving much advice-but like I said better then I expected & I DID NOT think of the worst...if that makes sense.
***I still have some tenderness-but only if ex: grandkids jump up on lap & kind of bang into left chest.

    Keep us updated...

    I had a lumpectomy and
I had a lumpectomy and several lymph nodes taken for biopsy about a month ago. It went rather smoothly. The injection of fluid they give you in the breast for the lymph node biopsy is a little painful but last only a second. The pain was fairly minimal and well maintained with the prescription pain meds they gave me. In less than a week, I was off them and used tylenol when needed. I never had much pain where the lump was removed. It was more stiff and sore under the arm where they took the lymph nodes. I was back to the gym working out (at a slower pace, minus arm excercise) a week later. I was pretty much back to normal activities in two weeks. I went in for surgery at 8:00 and was dismissed at 12:00. I am sure everything will go well for you.

    good luck

I had a lumpectomy in May
I had a lumpectomy in May 2010. I also had wire localization and sentinel node biopsy. The most painful part to me was when they injected the dye for the lymph nodes. Like CinKal said, it only lasted a few (long) seconds. Having the wire inserted wasn't bad at all, surprisingly. I was face-down on the table like when they did the biopsy. I was numbed, then they did xray to see where to put the wire. I didn't feel pain. I could feel them working, but I wasn't in pain. Then they will tape it down like crazy. I admit I was nervous and tense throughout the morning, but as I was waiting for them to take me into surgery, I remember thinking, 'that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be'. I have a sensitivity to bandage adhesives, so that actually was the most uncomfortable part of the day for me. Best wishes to you.

    Ask for something to help
Ask for something to help you relax. None of this is fun and they should make you as comfortable as possible.

    Good luck!

    Thanks
Thanks for asking this question. The doctor told me about how it would go, but I am the kind of person who will forget parts of what I am told. I am having my lumpecomy on March 22. So as many of us have heard in the past, there is no such thing as a dumb question. I think that is particularly true here. If we are mentally prepared for what we will face we can be more cooperative with procedures and likely reduce pain associated with such things.

    We are, indeed, so different
I can tell you my experience and hope yours is similar because it was so easy. I had the radioactive dye injection for the sentinel node the day before. I was nervous and so relieved that it didn't hurt. In fact, I walked to the hospital and obviously, walked home.

Next morning, they did the wire localization procedure, no drugs, didn't hurt. The blue dye injections were done when I was under anesthesia, thank goodness. I had pain after surgery and nausea and they gave me something for that before I left the hospital. The surgery was 9ish and I was home around 1. I had six nodes removed, all negative. I never needed pain medication. It just didn't hurt.

Next morning, I walked my regular three miles, went to a baby shower on Saturday, and back to work Monday.

    May yours be as smooth...

    Lumpectomy
I had mine just 2 months ago and it was not too bad at all. I also had the wire localization and removal of 11 lymph nodes (all were clean!). They first numbed me with a shot of lydocaine and I never felt the wires at all. The surgery took about 90 minutes and then 2 hours in recovery. I took 4 days off from work and was doing fine. Just have to be careful about lifting anything.
