Just curious-about having the wire locators ( think that is what it was called) just prior to breast surgery I was taken to a room sitting in chair right up to machine like mammo machine to wires pushed in breat. THen afterwards all taped up and could not move until post surgery. I wanted to be loopy but I was told I could not get any meds.

(it's almost 3 yrs since my surgery so kind of reliving or thinking of things about this time 3 yrs ago)

I just remember how I JUST wanted it over...NOW...

ANYONE else experience this? I think the worst part of the day!

along with couldn't get a vien-but common for me (worse now with only one arm to use)

    Didn't have anything like that!
Have got a clue about it - I didn't have anything like that at all. After prepped I was given some drugs and got quite sleepy. Was then rolled to OR.

    Been there done that ...
Yep ... I had wires inserted too. As I remember it ...I had to go to the mammo imagining place before surgery and they injected the radioactive dye to see where it went to the lymph nodes and that was extremely painful because they said they couldn't numb the area (I honestly thought I was breaking the nurses fingers squeezing them while the doctor injected the dye) ... but the instant the dye was in they numbed the area (thank goodness) then inserted the wires. They covered it with something ... and told me not to touch it or look at it ... then I walked out to the car in my hospital gown (it was lovely!) and a friend drove me to the hospital. So ... I had to walk into the hospital in that gorgeous gown ... but they did "admit" me immediately ... and then I was prepped for surgery.

That's all I remember until I woke up in recovery.

    Madonna look
I was told it was like Madonna designer style..POINTY covering on boob! I had this done just prior to surgery-i was wheeled back to room and then off to surgery. I know i was sitting and nurse had to keep pushing on my back (forward) I am sure not much help I am very very small breasted... I had to lay completely still on bed while waiting my turn to go in operating room. IN HOLDING area they knew i was very anxious-the gave me loopy meds in IV but knocked me out not just made me loopy...

so wow..you did this is two different locations huh? mmmmm

    I had that done too
The dye was soooo painful. I didn't get numbed, though luckily for me they did it all in the same building so I didn't have to go somewhere in my hospital gown! I just had to go upstairs. My father is a scientist and knew that the dye would be painful but didn't say anything to me because he didn't want me to get freaked out. Good call on his part. I had the wire in a separate procedure a few years earlier when they found a microcalcification. I guess since I was having a bilateral mastectomy this time no wire was necessary. None of this is fun, that is for sure. I am sorry you too had to go through this.

    Hang in there!

    (Meant to write "Haven't got
(Meant to write "Haven't got a clue" but goofed and wrote "Have got a clue" and now it won't let me edit it)

I'm thnking that rather or not that procedure is done depends on the type of cancer being dealt with - I'm IBC. The only 'thing' stuck in me was the first day - the day of the mammo, and sono - while still there the Radiologist did the needle biopsies (which he deadened/numbed the area) with me laying on my side. But no I never had anything even close to it.

last year had 2 surgeries on fingers first one i was awake and freaked...next time dr knocked me out...and yet i passed out in office after stitches take out..

so now this dr does listen to me when I say "DONT" tell me what you are doing, talk or give me any details" hehe

Is the wire thing maybe done just when a lumpectomy will be done?

I had a mastectomy and I didn't have any wires, but had to stop at the "imaging facility" on the way to the hospital for surgery, so that they could find the tumor with ultrasound. Then, the Dr. came in and injected a dye into the breast. The dye then did what dye does and by the time I got to the hospital and into surgery, they followed the dye to find cancerous lymph nodes.

And I have to say, the dye injection stung badly..they gave me a rubber ball to squeeze during the injection.
But the wires would probably have made me run the other way!

Yes I HAD lumpectomy...! I THINK I USED nurses hands to squeeze..I have very good memory but that has blurry parts and then some too clear!

    lumpectomy
Yes ... I had a lumpectomy ... so maybe that's when they do the wire thing. I did fine with the wire though ... because after squeezing the nurse's hand so hard from the pain of the dye injection ... because truly ... the instant they were finished with the dye ... they numbed my boob ... so I didn't feel a thing after that... except the tears running down my face and trying to breathe ... all the time apologizing to the nurse for squeezing soooooo hard. I still think I must have broken some of her fingers. The rubber ball is a good to squeeze is a great idea.

    the wire thing is
the wire thing is called"wire localization" at least in these parts. They put the breast in the mammo machine, leave it smooshed, take images, and then put the wire in to guide the surgeon to the area that needs to be removed and then recheck on the mammo. they do numb it prior to inserting the wire. I had this done a few years ago for calcifications. More recently I had the core biopsy. not sure how they decide.

I also had this done. It is
I also had this done. It is wire guided biopsy. I had lumps in each breast and they were going to do one of the wire inserts by ultrasound and one by mammo but it was too difficult to find the ultrasound one so they changed over to mammo for both and I was glad because I was hating all the rubbing with that wand. I also had the shots to my breast for the dye and they stung. I asked why no numbing and I was told that it can inhibit the flow of the dye. They had me rub my breasts for several minutes and then I was wheeled to the mammo room. They did numb me then. I was also sitting in a chair (because it can take awhile and they don't want us fainting) and had each one done. It took time but wasn't too uncomfortable. Most of the time after the needle is inserted they then put in the wire which has a small hook I think on the end, this is inserted in the lump and set like catching a fish and most of the time the needle is extracted and the wires taped down. My surgeon prefers the needle left in so I had and I kid you not dixie coffee cups placed over each breast over the needles and taped on (hence the not wanting us to move and jerk them). I put my gown on and was wheeled out to go to the surgery area. I did look like Madonna and my husband just gawked and laughed. I keep telling him that I was the example of when plastic surgery goes bad. It wasn't pleasant but not too bad. Oh, and I had cancer in only one of the two breasts so that was good.

    Wire localization
We call it "wire localization" here out West, too. :-)

Wire localization is the procedure where they insert wires into your breast(s) before surgery that stay there until your surgery. Not to be confused with the blue dye injection for the sentinel node biopsy, which is an entirely different procedure, for an entirely different purpose.

Wire localization is (as far as I know) only done for lumpectomy, because its purpose is to "guide" the surgeon to the tumor once he/she gets in there. If you have a mastectomy, there's no guiding needed -- he/she can probably find your breasts without too much help. :-)

    Hope that helps,

    I had it, too
When the initial biopsy was done, they put in a clip. Then day of lumpectomy, I first went to mammography place where they inserted the wire to the clip area. My tumor was very small and had been partially removed by biopsy. Only the wire is mentioned on my path report as being removed with the other tissue. Some months after, I had a chest x-ray and it mentioned a clip so they must leave it or put another one in for future reference. I was numbed and did not feel a thing when they did the wire thing but it was a long time to have my breast in the "vice" and that was quite uncomfortable. A patient escort then transported me and my husband in a van to the hospital where I was taken to nuclear medicine and had the dye for the sentinal node biopsy. They warned me it was going to hurt and the attending (a child) held my hand while the fellow (another child) injected the dye. It stung but it was not really painful - whew. I remember wondering why my breast wasn't numb since it had been for the wire insertion, but I'm here to tell you, it was not numb! And, for me, it was not painful.

I think this is pretty standard for lumpectomies.

    LOL Traci!
I kind of thought it was just done for lumpectomy. And yep, she found my breast without guidance..lol! And numerous lymph nodes.

I had to squeeze the rubber ball while getting the dye injection, with the doc asking me please not to hurt him. What a sissy he was!

    Ugh! I had it, too,
along with the dye - "It's just like a bee sting" - my *$$. Hurt like the very devil. My surgeon, when he explained all this to me, promised I would get a happy pill first. But I didn't get one, hence I was not happy!

    That was the worst thing
That was the worst thing ever being smaller breast and my lump being close to chest wall never experienced so much pain especially when he missed and had to re do it!!!!!!! Glad that's behind me. Di

    me too
I had a resident do it. It took him 3 tries. He didn't give me enough numbing medication, so it felt like a hot poker was going to come out the other side of my breast. Then I had to wait 4 hours to go into surgery. I was crying from the pain because the numbing medication stopped working after about 2 hours. If you find yourself in this situation, putting ice on the breast really helps (because you can't take any medicine for pain before surgery).

On a side note, I also had the radioactive tracer dye injected into my nipple area (this was the procedure before the guide wire), to map the sentinel lymph node. Apparently this dye hurts a lot. The doctor told me that in the past few months they started adding lidocaine to it (or some such numbing agent). When I had it done, I was more scared than hurt. In retrospect, it was the easiest part about that whole day.

One last thing....(I know I ramble). Today was my first day back to work, day 7 after the lumpectomy and axillary dissection. I was ok until 4 pm. The pain under my arm was intense. The breast pain isn't so bad. This was also the first day I wore a real bra (underwire); it was such a bad idea. Tomorrow I am going back to the binder they gave me from surgery. It really makes a difference!
