Update on Mike

The e mail came from the Washington transplant office today! They are willing to take a closer look at Mikes case and complete the transplant work up to see if he's well enough to handle the surgery. First he's got to get rid of the infection he's developed over the last few days, and they are now babying his kidneys as well as his liver because they have been stressed by handling the stuff the liver hasn't been able to. His BP dropped last night and they are concerned they are possibly damaged from that.

If those things go well over the weekend, then we will be travelling by air ambulance to Richmond Virginia for the evaluation by midweek. They told me to go home and pack my bags so I'm ready at a moments notice. It doesn't mean he's on the list, but is one giant step closer. Without a new liver he has weeks to live.

I find myself in an amazing place of gratitude tonight. First, the good news from the onc, then this. The road is still long and full of obstacles, but I feel more positive now than I have in weeks. Looks like Christmas in Virginia this year. I knew there was a reason I didn't wrestle with that stupid artificial tree. You need a degree in engineering to put it together. Maybe you can come over and give me a hand with it next year, Ketz?

    My family lives in VA-got off the boat in the 1700s and never left. They helped build Richmond and Williamsburg. I am part Powhatan. I will be in VA for Xmas albeit 2 hrs away. Let me know if you need any info. I would start looking into a hotel to see which ones aren't full. Richmond is close to Williamsburg and Xmas there is BIG. People usually book a year in advance for there and things book up.

    By the way I have a hard time putting that stuff together.

    Richmond was the capitol of the confederacy. My people worked the tobacco fields. There I a huge episcopal church there. Arthur Ash lived there.

    I digress. I am sorry. I am a history buff.

    I'll be staying in the VA version of the Ronald McDonald-ish hostel they've got for the transplant center, so my lodging is taken care of.

    FYI--My great great great great uncle fought as a cannoneer on the confederate side during the siege of Petersburg, even though he was from NYC. The rumor is that he was paid by a rich Yankee to take his place in the fight, and switched sides. Leave it to my poor shanty Irish family to take pride in telling a story like that!

    So, some of my ancestors came on the Mayflower and some came on ships during the potato famine in Ireland and made themselves a place here. I'm proud of them all.

    We're in Northern Maryland, so not really handy to Richmond. It is a lovely city, however.

    Lots of hopes for a miracle - you have it coming. This is far better news than I expected to hear from you.

    My daughter lives in Richmond, so I've been there quite a bit. Much colder than FL, get a cheap puffy coat at Target. Let me know if you need inside info on getting about, for real. It's a beautiful old city.
