Hello and I hope your day is going well. Does anyone know what can help with the hiccups and burps. John is stage 4 has had radiation and is taking herceptin and 5FU every other week at this time. He has had several other chemo drugs as well. Is doing fairly well. Maintaining a decent weight and is able to eat and drink ok but hiccups and burps ALOT it is especially annoying at night. I know this is a small thing compared to the many things we face over time but because I Love him so I want to make him comfortable. Thanks Shirley

    Hi Shirley,
    I was just

    Hi Shirley,

I was just visiting my father a week a half ago and he had uncontrollable hiccups... he didn't sleep for 3 nights in a row and on top of chemo and radiation it really set him back -- the constant muscle contractions aggravated the pain he's been having from his liver tumor.

We tried a few things... 1) there are two types of drugs he took (one is a muscle relaxant and the other starts with a Z). I can ask my mom again what the names are. 2) the hiccups seemed to ease up with sips of ginger ale 3) we also tried changing his position in the bed. Some other attempts that didn't work, but may work for others (sips of cold ice water, breathing in a paper bag & taking honey.

I hope one of these work. My father's been getting radiation for his liver tumor and chemo. The doctor felt that the hiccups could be from the radiation, but also may be from the naseua (spelling) medication.

    Hiccups
    Hello Shirley
Sorry you and John are going through a horrible time with hiccups. They can be most annoying and painful! The best tried and true rememdy I know of is breathing into a paper bag. Place the bag completely over his nose and mouth, have him breathe in and out for about a minute. It has something to do with breathing in your own CO2. Hope this helps!
