Just curious of how others were treated at work? Mainly from boss? At the start of my "Cancer" I was told don't worry, do what you have to! I had plenty of sick time and only missed 2 1/2 wks sick post surgery as well as some days for misc Dr appts, pre op test etc.etc. I was going to treatment for hour daily-but after the fist few days I was called in office to say from NOW on you must use sick days! My cancer center was nice enough to make changes so i could have treatments on my lunch hour! when time for my annual review I had remark about using TOO MUCH SICK TIME. (mind you when all said and done I still had about 30 or more day remaining) They knew my whole situation!

My boss is an angel from
My boss is an angel from heaven. I have worked with him for 14 years and he basically told me to do what I needed to do and take as much time as I needed. He also told me NOT to tell our corporate people, so they didn't even know I was out. The folks in my office are all very supportive and would do anything I needed. I am one of the fortunate ones, I know. I just wish all my sisters could be treated like I was. I know that if I ever have a direct report in the same situation, which I sincerely hope I never do, I will be just as accommodating.

I think that is against the law, something about dissabilities and discrimination, they don't have to pay you, but they can't use it against you either, and why shouldn't it come out of sick-leave pay, and what about family medical leave? on the other hand.....I looked at your profile and didn't see anything about your cancer story, what's up with that? Trying to send hug....alison

    My Boss
John was very good to me throughout my treatment. My surgeon's office was right up the road from my office, so when I got the diagnosis, I went straight back to the office to tell him that I had the cancer and was taking the rest of the day off to take it all in, but would be back in the morning. I told him I would need at least a week when I had the lumpectomy and had no idea how much time I would be needing off due to doctor's appointments and so on. He told me to take as much time as I needed. I immediately applied for FMLA to make sure both he and I were safe and it turned out I took 2 weeks off for the lumpectomy, then 2 days for the port to be put in. Every third Friday I took off for chemo for 6 rounds, then I'd come in early and leave around 2:30 to go for the 36 radiation treatments. Then another 2 days for the removal of the port, and another 2 days for the removal of a cyst from my other breast. Its been 2 years, but he has no objections to when I call out and tell him I'm just too tired to come in. He's been a brick through all this and I just hope nobody gets fired over having the cancer, there should be a law!!!

I am sure I could have put up a stink..i found out after the fact at Cancer support group with man topic Work issues. (I drover over an hour since first one I had seen in that topic) so many things were done wrong-I did write rebuttal for my file and confirmed it was in my file. I did not do family medical leave since I had well over 45-50 days sick and 3-4 wks vacation.

I now know IF I EVER am in this situation again or someone close to me " MY legal Rights" I was foolish not to check-I am not one to speak up much-when I do it bites me in butt for sure!

So I DID USE MY sick time and even after all said and done still had close to a month left-yet comment about using TOO MUCH SICK TIME...that hurt worse then treatments...took to heart...I will never get over that...

    Sorry you are having a
Sorry you are having a difficult time. It only makes you stress more. My boss is wonderful. I just started this job 4 months now but on my second interview I told her about my cancer and that I would need time off to finish treatments. I took 3 days off on the weeks I had chemo (Wednesday - Friday). I'm now doing radiation during my lunch hour and she is very supportive of that. I have 10 more treatments left. As I stated I just started this job but she has agreed to let me take a week's vacation after radiation to go to Florida for some relaxation. I will not have accurred any vacation time until January but she's giving it to me after Thanksgiving. I really feel blessed to have her as a boss and I can say a new friend. I've been trying to think of someway to say THANKS, but have not come up with any ideas. Do anyone have any suggestions on something I can give to her to let her know how much I really appreciate her.

all I CAN Say is wow..and I am jealous
I had been at my job 6 + yrs and I thought from conversations I WOULD be AOK and set with work. At TIME I really think the stress from work was worse then much of treatments. It still hits home-big time. I DID (like said above) wrote nice to the point rebuttle letter to have in my file.

Since going to support group ref: work..I now know better & hopefully will never need..but KNOW MY RIGHTS and will make sure I get what I am entitled to by law..

Sparkle: I am big one on Ediable arrangments (do you have them near you?) I gave a huge one to Radiation Staff on my last day! Other idea gift card to spa for manicure or massage or something...

really from sounds of it..JUST an nice card with your thoughts would do!

    Family Medical Leave
My understanding regarding Family Medical Leave, is that it protects you, from amongst other things, from exactly what your boss is trying are to do to you. Family Medical Leave, has nothing to do with whether or not you have sick leave on the books, but instead prohibit discriminitory actions, like those you are experiencing now, from what you say. If you are still in treatment, I would ask my doc about it...once signed, it give you the right to get treatment, and receive proper medical care, on your schedule, withoout interference/ discrimination from your employer, and it's good for a year. My husband was under it's protection while I was in treatment. So he could be available to me, on a moments notice, and his employer couldn't say or do anything corrective. Good luck..Alison ps If you don't take your legal rights seroiusly, and protect yourself, no one else will do it for you. Who cares about some comment about TOO MUCH SICK LEAVE, how about I SURVIVED CANCER! Sounds like you have been one of the luckier ones with regards to your cancer treatment, thank God, BE GRATEFULL!! I apologize if I sound unsympathethic, but sometime you just have to lick your wounds and move on...

I like the idea of the gift
I like the idea of the gift car to the spa. There's a great place by where we work.
Thanks. Don't let the job stress you too much. I know it's easier said than done when you have to go there everyday. But try to keep positive and maybe your boss and co-workers will see the bigger picture.

    first boss, second boss
My first one was wonderful, time off when needed, she said our work place was family to me. Do whatever I needed to do to take care of myself.
She got transferred!!! and my new boss--- I am actually afraid to ever say anything about my cancer dx for fear she will use it against me and say I can't perform my job. I don't complain about hot air in the rooms, or too long of a walk, or extra duties after hours.
    Stressful !!!!

    Always use FMLA
The purpose of FMLA is to protect your job. If your company qualifies for FMLA it is their responsibility to place you on FMLA. YOu need to go talk to your HR person.

I do not understand why you do not take sick days? you are entitled to take sicks day and use FMLA as well. I am wondering that you are having about 60 sick days left. Most companies give from 7 -10 sick days.
I am not surprised that your co-workers do not want to pick up a slag. You manager should not give negative review because you have taken time off due to illness. Just be sure that your paperwork is in order. Working for a big corporation My manager always requested working with HR during my treatment. When I exhausted my sick days option I was on short-term disability, dealing with HR on regular basis.
    Take care

I used all my PTO and FMLA,
I used all my PTO and FMLA, I was part time so I did not get as much as if I had been full time. The company then allowed me to take unpaid leave without FMLA for about a month. After that, they said they could not hold my job for me any longer, but I was eligible for re-hire once I was ready to come back to work. They let me go 4 days short of being eligible to receive a holiday bonus.
