If you can find a book called One's Company by Barbara Holland, you may find it helpful. She talks about dealing with life when you live alone. She was divorced, but she has talked to people who have been widowed, etc. The book is both accurate and in some cases amusing. I read it years ago after my mother died and have found it helpful now, too. It describes things that everyone deals with.
For example, she talks about how difficult it is to make decisions without someone to bounce things off, someone to say, well, yes, I see you want to do that, but what about this, instead? Without a sounding board it can be so hard to decide on things.
There are chapters on food and going out and all the areas of life. She talks about the way men and women handle the same things and how they cope. If it does nothing else, it may make you smile.
