I went today for my 1st mammo and bone density test after my surgeries and radiation treatment. I find out the results tomorrow and I am nervous and I am praying for everything to be ok. I have blocked it out of my mind since radiation treatments ended in April and now the day has come too soon and I am stressing about the "what could be". Thanks everyone for listening.

    mammo results
Well the results are not as comforting as I would like but....the Dr said that it looked fine but the area where I had the lumpectomy he said has a distorted image due to the scar tissue. He said that area wasn't able to be seen clearly because of the scar tissue and told me to get another mammo of the right breast in six months. He said this was not uncommon and that it happens to about twenty percent of women who had lumpectomies. Has anyone else out there heard of this? I am looking at the glass as half full and not half empty but it is a little unsettling. I had hoped to hear "everything is clear". To dance or not to dance? :(

    SURE DID!
Hi Terri, I had my lumpectomy done in Oct 97 and when all treatments were over and I had my first mammo same result, scar causing viewing issues. It scared the tar out of me but over the years they simply compare the image to last years image and if they look similar they do not worry about it and neither do I. I hope this does help to ease your worry a tad as I certainly can relate.

    Very similar results
After agonizing about the results of my mammo and ultrasound last week, I decided to dance with NED on Monday after getting my results.I had the lumpectomy in March and completed my radiation in June 2010.
My results indicated post surgery "changes" ( including scattered calcifications) but no evidence of malignancy. I was hoping for something more optimistic especially after the tech called the doctor into the room during my ultrasound to point out,at least two areas, that appeared "different" and abnormal. The doctor, not mine, but the radiologist told me this is not uncommon.

I just read about such findings in Susan Love's breast book. It's very common to have obscured views because of scarring after lumpectomy. Think positive and hopefully the 6 months will go by quickly and the next mammo has more definitive results. I also read that only an expert should read the mammos so as not to give improper results.

Thanks to all of you for responding. I definitely feel much better about the mammo and I am going to put on those dancing shoes and start stepping. You ladies always have a way of easing my mind and giving me comfort. Thanks again for your support.

    Hang in there
My radiation oncologist had actually recommended an early mammogram (only 3 months after my last surgery) to get a baseline test. He said that without a baseline, sometimes radiologists can get "freaked out" by what is really scar tissue. It sounds to me like what your radiologist read could very well be normal. Don't "half empty" your glass :)
